Yellowjackets Edge Westmont 79-75 in Friday Night Thriller

BILLINGS, Mont.- The Montana State University Billings men's basketball team improved to 3-1 on the season, dishing the Westmont College Warriors (0-1) their first loss of the season. The momentum rollercoaster matchup was capped off with a 79-75 Yellowjacket victory to close out the first day of the 2024 GNAC/PacWest Crossover.
The 'Jackets were hungry for a Warrior victory, falling short to Westmont a season ago in Santa Barbara, CA. Despite leading for only 14 total minutes, MSUB dominated the stat sheet, outrebounding the Warriors 42-30, outscoring them off the bench 31-9, capitalizing on fast break points 21-5, and nearly doubling second chance points 14-8. Where the Yellowjackets truly created their separation was outrebounding Westmont on the offensive end 15-9 and setting a new MSUB record, making 21 free throws while shooting perfect from foul line.

Offensively the 'Jackets shot over 40 percent from the field as a team with five players reaching double digits in points. Leading the way for the 'Jackets was Jalen Tot, who posted 16 points on 6-15 from the field with five rebounds and three steals. Brendon Johnson also had a 16-point performance while shooting 5-12 from the field with a team high six boards, one assist, and one steal. Following close behind was Kael Robinson with 12 points, Pedro Ellery with 10, and Jajuan Tot with 10, tying his career high in a Yellowjacket uniform.

HEAR FROM COACH FENNELLY: "It was a great team win tonight, it was great to see us take care of the toughness stats (rebounds, offensive boards, and free throws) which ultimately won us the game against a good Westmont team. Proud of how the guys stayed together and executed the game plan. We'll enjoy the win until midnight and then its time to get back to work for another great matchup tomorrow against Hawaii-Hilo."

A momentum swinging came with seven lead changes started out with the Warriors jumping out to an early 18-8 lead. MSUB quickly answered with a 14-1 run backed behind Johnson who had seven in the stretch to help the 'Jackets take their first lead of the night. Westmont fell behind as much as five points but with 11 seconds left in the first half, they retook the lead by one point. With three seconds left Famous Lefthand brought the ball down, dishing it to Johnson who nailed a triple in the final seconds to give the Yellowjackets a 33-31 lead heading into the locker room.

Robinson got things going for the 'Jackets to open up the final 20 minutes of play but the Warriors quickly went on a 7-0 run to take the 43-39 advantage. This is where Jalen Tot started to heat up, once the Warriors extended their lead to as much as nine points, Tot went off for 10 points in just over nine minutes to bring the Yellowjackets back within one. From there it was back-and-forth basketball but with Westmont in foul trouble MSUB capitalized, making every single free throw to ice the game and take the 79-75 victory.
