‘Jackets Narrowly Fall to WWU in Four

BILLINGS, Mont.- The Montana State University Billings Yellowjacket volleyball team (7-17, 0-14 GNAC) battled in Alterowitz but narrowly fell 3-1 to the Western Washinton University Vikings (10-9, 9-4 GNAC).

The Yellowjackets played some of the best volleyball they had recently, hitting over .340 in the first three sets, including a .412 team hitting percentage in the second frame of the night. The service line and the net is where the Vikings created their separation, leading the 'Jackets 6-1 in service aces and 11-2 in blocks, including an impressive 20 team block assist performance.

Leading the offensive charge for MSUB was Jordin Taulua and Julia Gordon who combined for 27 kills, a .305 hitting percentage, three blocks, six digs, and one service ace. Taulua alone had a team best of 15 kills with a .267 hitting percentage, while Gordon put it down 12 times with a .345 hitting percentage. Posting another career double-double was Jahsita Fa'ali'i who had 10 kills and 10 digs while chipping in one block at the net.

Coordinating the offense for freshman setter Addie Allen who posted 20 assists with six digs and Emma Fa'alogo who was close behind with 18 assists, four digs, and one kill. On the back row, Christine Funk led the way with a team best 17 total digs in the four-set match and four assists to add, followed by defensive specialist Avarey Stuff with seven digs and one assist.

HEAR FROM COACH WILLIAMS: "Overall I thought we played well tonight but got stuck in a few rotations that cost us. We had great momentum at times, but it was a roller coaster, and we were unable to keep it. We struggled with consistency that was what cost us the match at the end of the day. Christine played great defensively, and Julia and JT were impressive on the offensive end for us."

Western Washington came out hot out of the gates, getting ahead to and early 16-8 lead. The Yellowjackets tried to make a late push with a 6-2 run backed behind four kills from Gordon, but the Vikings went on to take the opening set 25-17. The second set was a different story, MSUB took control leading the Vikings the entire way. The first half was back-and-forth volleyball until Fa'ali'i led a 6-2 run with a pair of kills to give the Yellowjackets the 19-15 advantage. From there, Taulua and Gordon took it away, leading MSUB to match point and putting it away for the 25-18 victory. The Vikings gained their momentum back in the third set, getting ahead to a 23-13 lead and taking the third frame 25-15, followed by a 25-16 victory in the fourth to take the match 3-1.
