NAMPA, Idaho – The Montana State University Billings men's soccer team continued to pick up points in the third week of conference play, picking up a result on the road with a 0-0 draw against Northwest Nazarene in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.
Coming off a high-scoring win in their last match, this time it would be the Yellowjacket's (3-3-4, 2-1-1 GNAC) defense that would stand out. The MSUB back line would limit the Nighthawks (3-5-2, 2-1-1 GNAC) to just six shots in the match, and only one shot on goal, to build a comfortable base to build on for the match. The Yellowjackets would have their chances to take the lead, attempting 15 shots and putting six efforts on target, but would be unlucky to not find a winner, despite controlling the flow of play for the majority of the game.
The two squads struggled to generate much in attack during the first half, combining to attempt just six shots across the opening 45 minutes of play. But the Yellowjackets would outshoot Northwest Nazarene 4-2, including the half's lone shot on goal, when
Florian Senf would place a shot in the bottom left corner, forcing a save from the Nighthawk goalie. That would be the best attempt for either team in the half, with neither team able to generate much more before halftime.
The second half would see the Yellowjackets push hard to find an opportunity, outshooting the Nighthawks by even more with an 11-4 advantage. MSUB would attempt five more shots on goal, but the Nighthawks would continue to make the final stop multiple times, keeping MSUB off the scoreboard. The Nighthawks would have a few chances of their own, but none strong enough to truly threaten to take the lead, with the final whistle sounding to seal a scoreless draw, moving both teams even with seven points in the GNAC Standings.
Senf finished the match with four shots, and two shots on goal, leading the 'Jackets in both totals.
Bjarne Fedkenhauer had three shots with one on goal, while
Sam Kemmer,
So Nagano, and
Ryan Hanley each had a pair of shots and one shot on target.
Rene Tello attempted a pair of shots. In goal,
Fred Reiter was only required to make one save, with him and the MSUB defense locking up the team's second consecutive shutout.
THE BUZZ: Senf was selected as the Intermountain Health Player of the Game… the Yellowjackets have now kept five clean sheets on the season, including three in GNAC play… it marks the fourth time in program history the team has kept five shutouts in a season, tying for sixth all-time… Reiter has now kept three shutouts this season.
