LACEY, Wash. – The Montana State University Billings women's soccer team were forced to settle for the draw against Saint Martin's University, tying 0-0 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.
Despite controlling much of the game and outshooting their opponents 21-14 overall, and 11-7 in shots on goal, the Yellowjackets (4-4-2, 1-3-2 GNAC) would be unable to find a way onto the scoresheet, collecting the team's second tie in GNAC action this season against the Saints (1-8-2, 1-3-2 GNAC). The 'Jackets battled hard on both ends, defending well to earn the team's fifth shutout of the season, the program's most in a single season since 2015.
The Yellowjackets spent the majority of the first half on the attack, outshooting the Saints 9-4 overall, and 4-1 in shots on target, while controlling the pace of play in the half. The Yellowjacket's best chance of the half came in the 12
th minute, with
Jackie Sharpe finding an opening in the box. But Sharpe's effort would hit the crossbar, before
Liberty Palmer's follow up would be saved by the Saint's goalkeeper, keeping MSUB off the scoresheet. The Yellowjackets would continue to threaten in the half, with Sharpe attempting four shots in the half, while Palmer put three shots on goal. But despite their efforts, MSUB would be unable to find an opener in the opening half. The Yellowjacket's defense would ensure the score would remain tied at the half though, giving Saint Martin's little room to operate, while goalkeeper
Claire Brogdon saved the only shot on goal she faced all half.
The second half began in a similar way to the one before it, with the 'Jackets once again seeing more of the ball and creating the game's best chances. MSUB would attempt a total of 12 shots in the second half, including seven shots on goal, as they pushed hard to take the lead throughout the half. But the Saints would be able to take advantage as the Yellowjackets pushed numbers forward, finding more chances of their own in the second half. But despite a combined 22 second half shots and 13 shots on goal, neither team would be able to score in the game, with the final whistle sealing a scoreless draw.
Brogdon finished the match with seven total saves, Palmer and Sharpe both finished the game with five total shots, with Palmer putting four shots on goal, and Sharpe two.
Erika Wilson put both of her shots on goal, while
Taylor Gertsch and
Chloe Fredenburg had two shots with one on target.
Ave Roberts put her lone shot on goal, while
Nyah Attaway attempted a pair of shots, and
Jamie Maas and
Vivien Guese each attempted one shot.
THE BUZZ: Brogdon was selected as the Intermountain Health Player of the Game… the shutout was also Brogdon's fifth individual shutout this season in net, moving her into a four-way tie for seventh in program history for total shutouts in a season… her five shutouts also rank ninth for shutouts in a career by a Yellowjacket goalkeeper, tying her with
