ELLENSBURG, Wash. – The Montana State University Billings baseball team dropped two more games Saturday against Central Washington University in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.
The two losses meant that the Yellowjackets (11-17, 5-9) were swept by the Wildcats (12-20, 8-8 GNAC). The 'Jackets and Wildcats played another close game to open the day, with Central Washington emerging with a 9-8 victory, before running away late into game two to collect a 9-4 victory.
Game 1: MSUB 8, CWU 9
The Yellowjackets got off to a hot start offensively in game one, with runs coming from extra base bits.
Payton Flynn opened the scoring with a two-run double in the first inning, before the 'Jackets had a big third inning.
Kaden Kirshenbaum scored
Carson Green on an RBI double, before back-to-back home runs from
Mitch Winter and Flynn put the 'Jackets up 6-1 after three. The Wildcats scored four runs in the top of the fourth to make it a one run game, and despite a
Hayden Foltz home run in the fifth, scored three more runs the following inning to take a 8-7 lead.
The Yellowjackets tied things up once again in the top of the eighth on a
Jack Nehler double, but the Wildcats responded once again with a Jake Felton go-ahead single to put Central up 9-8. Jonathan Garza finished off the 'Jackets in the top of the ninth, earning the win after throwing five innings in relief.
Flynn was 2-3 in the game with three RBIs, and Winter was 2-4 with two RBIs. Green and Foltz each had two hits and two runs, while Kirshenbaum was 1-5 with a double.
Game 2: MSUB 4, CWU 9
Hayden Foltz started things off with an RBI double in the first inning for MSUB, but Central Washington responded by scoring the game's next four runs, including three in the bottom of the third. The 'Jackets rallied once again with RBIs from
Brock Molenda,
Carson Green, and Foltz once again to even the score at 4-4, but those would be the last runs the 'Jackets would score in the game. After Brady Hinkle's two-run double in the fifth gave the Wildcats the lead back, Central would tack on three more runs in the sixth inning, sealing a comfortable victory and the series sweep of MSUB.
Green was 2-4 with an RBI and a pair of runs, while Foltz was 2-3 with two RBIs.
Kaden Kirshenbaum went 2-3, as did
Bodee Wright and
Jack Nehler.
THE BUZZ: Foltz was selected as the St. Vincent Healthcare Player of the Day, going a 4-8 on the day with 3 RBIs.. Flynn now had a team high after his blast today.
