MISSOULA, Mont. – Playing on its heels from start-to-finish on Friday afternoon at South Campus Stadium, the Montana State University Billings women's soccer team was shut out by host University of Montana 6-0.
The NCAA D1 Grizzlies dominated the run of play, leading 5-0 by halftime and out-shooting the Yellowjackets 30-2 in the lopsided match.
UM (1-2-2) earned its first win of the season by using goals from five different players while Maysa Walters had three assists to lead the offensive charge. Delaney Schorr scored twice, while Kayla Bushmaker, Ally Henrickson, Allie Larsen, and Riley O'Brien each added goals for the hosts.
MSUB fell to 0-3 with the defeat, and relied on three saves from
Clare Keenan and five from
Tuva Sallvin in goal during the offensive barrage by the Griz.
Bushmaker got the scoring started just four minutes into the match, nudging the game's first goal off the far post and into the net. Schorr doubled the tally in the 28th minute with a header goal off a cross from McKenzie Kilpatrick, as UM took advantage of the set piece.
The Yellowjackets faltered defensively in the final 10 minutes of the half, with Henrickson scoring in the 37th minute, Larsen finding the net in the 39th, and Schorr doubling her tally just three minutes before the halftime whistle to put the game out of reach.
The Yellowjackets improved in all facets of the game over the second 45 minutes, allowing just a 76th minute goal from O'Brien on assists by Eliza Bentler and Walters. The Griz's shot tally also fell from 17 to 13 in the second half, while MSUB managed both of its attempts – one each from
Jillian Hust and
Emilyn Krans – in the second.
UM goalkeeper Camellia Xu earned the shutout and did not have to make a save in her 90 minutes between the posts.
Abby Sena and
Lauren Becraft were the lone Yellowjackets to play the full 90 minutes in the match for MSUB.
