BILLINGS, Mont. – The Montana State University Billings women's basketball team ran away with the game against the Montana State University Northern Skylights, defeating their opponent 91-43 at Alterowitz Gymnasium on Saturday evening.
The 'Jackets (10-1) shot 51.6 percent from the field, and 48.1 percent from three, sprinting past the opposing Skylights 4-5) in a game the 'Jackets led for almost its entirety.
Aspen Giese and
Skylar Patton tied for a team high 13 points in a game where every Yellowjacket who featured scored at least one basket and had at least one rebound. Giese had a trio of rebounds, assists, and steals in the game as well. "I thought the girls came out ready to play tonight," said MSUB associate head coach
Alisha Breen. "We talked a lot about communication being extremely important with a team that runs a majority of wet plays, and the girls' focus was phenomenal. We were able to force turnovers due to being locked in on our game plan, and that turned into great transition basketball."
Kortney Nelson finished with 12 points, and a game high five assists.
Chloe Williams had 11 points, five rebounds, and three steals, while freshman
Bailee Sayler scored a career high 11 off the bench, going 3-for-5 on 3-pointers.
Natalie Andreas and
Kaitlin Grossman each had a team high four steals, while three other players had three. The Yellowjackets' 91 points were a season high, as were their 13 made threes, 25 assists, and 20 steals.
"Having all 10 players score and get a rebound is pretty cool, and I'm very proud of the girls for their effort," Breen said. "We are excited to finish up our non-conference play next week in Vegas against two very good teams."
MSUB was able to jump out to an emphatic lead in the first quarter, outscoring the Skylights 21-11 in the first period, and really turned it on after that, leading 47-23 by halftime. The blowout win allowed Coach Woodin to spread out playing time nearly evenly, giving his starters a smaller load and showcasing the impressive depth the 'Jackets possess.
No player played more than 26 minutes, and less than 16 minutes in the game. Forty-two of MSUB's 91 points were scored by bench players, and three of the five 'Jackets who scored double digits came off the bench.
THE BUZZ: Sayler was selected as the St. Vincent Healthcare Player of the Game…this was the first meeting between MSU-Northern and MSU-Billings since 2013, where the 'Jackets won 76-59.
UP NEXT: The Yellowjackets play next in the Holiday Hoops Classic in Las Vegas. Their first of two games take place Friday, December 16 at 3:30 p.m., where they take on the Texas A&M University Kingsville Javelinas.
