BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Montana State University Billings men's soccer team concluded its season with a 2-2 draw against #25 Simon Fraser University late Friday night, followed up by a 3-0 defeat against Western Washington University in the conclusion of Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.
MSU Billings 2, Simon Fraser 2 – November 4, 2022 at Langley, British Columbia
Due to weather issues in Burnaby, the matchup between the 'Jackets and Red Leafs, which was originally scheduled for Thursday night, moved to Friday with an 8:15 p.m. kickoff. Despite the delays weather still impacted the night's proceedings as the game was called with three minutes remaining in the second half.
The scoring came quick in the 'Jackets penultimate game of the season. Simon Fraser took just eight minutes to open the scoring with a set piece goal from defender Niko Papakyriakopoulos. It wouldn't take MSUB long to equalize though, when
Callum Bryan's long shot found its way into the back of the net in the 14th minute.
After another stretch of tightly contested play, SFU found a second goal when Alan Soto's deep shot from just past midfield found its way over
Jeremi Campagnolo and pushed SFU into the lead once again. But just like earlier in the half, the 'Jackets found a way to rally once again when a loose ball from a corner kick was collected and finished by
Pascal Pisarek to even the game up once more 2-2.
Despite both teams pushing before the game was called, neither team found a way through in the second half. The Yellowjackets were outshot 20-17 by the Red Leafs, but put eight on target, compared to just four by the hosts. The opening goal scorer Bryan had five shots, three on target in the game, and fellow midfielder
Bjarne Fedkenhauer had four shots. Both of
Jeremie Briquet's shots forced saves from SFU keeper Justyn Sandhu, who made six in the game. Campagnolo finished with two saves for the 'Jackets.
Western Washington 3, MSU Billings 0 – November 5, 2022 at Bellingham, Wash.
With a short break between games on the road trip, the 'Jackets concluded their season against Western Washington. Both teams attacked well, with MSUB outshooting the Vikings 16-14, and in shots on target 6-4. But WWU goalkeeper Brandon Locke was outstanding all night, finishing with five saves. The Vikings broke the deadlock in the 41st minute, with Hatcher Manning capitalizing on a poor clearance to thrust the Vikings ahead.
The hosts would hold off the Yellowjacket attack again in the second half, capitalizing on the break to score two more goals. A long throw from Locke on a collected ball would find a streaking Albin Jonsson up field, who finished daftly around a diving Campagnolo. In minute 76, Jonsson would complete his brace, finishing a through ball from Alessandro Tomasi to see the game off.
Campagnolo finished with one save in the game for MSUB. Senior
Jeremie Briquet had seven shots, with two on goal.
Valdemar Fogt had two shots, as did
Kamden Beck. The Yellowjackets finished their season with a 5-9-3 overall record, and a 3-6-3 record in GNAC play.
THE BUZZ: The Yellowjackets have a 2-24-5 all-time record against Simon Fraser, picking up a tie and a loss against the Red Leafs this season…MSUB's all-time record against Western Washington is 11-23-3, and the 'Jackets lost both games this season versus the Vikings.
