BILLINGS, Mont. – The Montana State University Billings women's soccer team finished their season with a 1-0 victory over the Central Washington University Wildcats in the conclusion of Great Northwest Athletic Conference regular season play.
The Yellowjackets (3-12-4, 3-9-2 GNAC) ended their season on a high note and managed to see off their seniors on a victory, despite the strong fight put up by the Wildcats (3-11-4, 2-9-3 GNAC). MSUB was able to hop Central Washington in the season standings, finishing seventh to the Wildcat's eighth. "All I can say is congratulations to the team, and in particular to our five seniors for winning their last game at Yellowjacket Field," said MSUB head coach
Stephen Cavallo. "I am very proud of the leadership and growth they have all shown during their time here at MSUB. We will miss them tremendously."
After a back and forth first 10 minutes, the 'Jackets dominated the first half offensively, outshooting the Wildcats 8-3. However, quality goalkeeping from both sides kept both sides scoreless for the entirety of the first half. And the score continued that way briefly in the second half. But that would change in the 51
st minute when the 'Jackets finally found a way through.
Playing from the back,
Taylor Gertsch's pass to
Jackie Sharpe would send her running forward. The defense closing in on Sharpe would leave
Sydney Torres unmarked in the middle of the pitch. A well-placed ball by Sharpe was all that was needed to put the senior one on one with the CWU goalie, and Torres's left footed shot would find its way past the diving Morgan Blankenship to give MSUB a 1-0 lead.
The rest of the game would be a defensive masterclass by the 'Jackets, only letting up two shots in the last 20 minutes to see out the rest of the game for a victory, ending their season on a high note. MSUB goalkeeper Tuva Sallivin finished with three saves, while the defense combined to only allow six shots all game. Sharpe pulled the strings of the 'Jackets attack all day, finishing with five shots to go with her assist. Torres finished with two shots in the game, as did substitute
Taylor Ingram, whose pair of long efforts forced the opposing Blankenship to make some difficult saves.
THE BUZZ: Sharpe was selected as the St. Vincent Healthcare Player of the Game…Torres finished as the 'Jackets leading goal scorer with three…her six points on the season were tied for top with Sharpe…goalkeeper
Clare Keenan didn't feature in the 'Jackets final homestand, but still finished tied for 16th in Division II with 102 saves…the Yellowjackets all-time record against Central Washington now sits at 15-13-1.
