Strobel, Larson claim GNAC Golfer of the Week honors

10/10/2022 12:30:00 PM

PORTLAND, Ore. – Sweeping the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Golf Player of the Week awards, Dawson Strobel and Brennan Larson of Montana State University Billings were announced as the weekly winners on Monday by the conference office.

It was the first-career player of the week award for both Strobel, a senior on the men's team, and Larson, a junior on the women's team. "We are happy for our team captains to pick up the weekly GNAC honors," said MSUB head coach Adam Buie.

Strobel earned the honor after winning his second tournament of the 2022 fall season, as he claimed the title at last week's Yellowjacket Invitational at Lake Hills Golf Club. Strobel shot a career-three round best 211 (69-70-72), finishing at 5-under-par and holding off second-place Joseph Vincent of South Dakota Mines by a single stroke.

Strobel's 3-under-par 69 in the opening round was one stroke off his career low, which he achieved during the SD Mines Hardrocker Invitational on Sept. 20 in South Dakota. Strobel finished the fall season leading the Yellowjackets and ranking fifth in the conference with a scoring average of 71.40 strokes per round. He made par or better in 6 of 10 rounds played during the fall season. "Dawson continued his torrid fall at our home event and picked up another win," said Buie. "He is playing as well as anyone in the country at the moment, and it gives the team a lot of confidence knowing that our No. 1 is posting par or better scores consistently. We cannot wait to get back out and compete in the spring."

Larson also had a career-best performance at the Yellowjacket Invitational, tying for fifth place with a two-round total of 161 (80-81). Larson's 80 in her opening round of the event was a collegiate career low, and she followed just one stroke behind that to earn her first-career top-5 finish at an event.

Larson, who is competing Monday at the Western Washington Invitational, ranks fifth on the Yellowjackets with a season scoring average of 85.17 strokes through her first six rounds of the year. "Brennan did really well this week making the all-tournament team at our home event," said Buie. "She has really stepped up her game this summer and taken on the role of team captain. She has provided good leadership for our very young women's squad."

Strobel and Larson made it three GNAC Players of the Week this year for MSUB, after Kevin Kolb claimed the honor last week with a victory at MSUB's Beartooth Invitational.

The Yellowjacket women wrap up their 2022 fall season on Tuesday with the final round of the Western Washington Invitational, after the men finished their fall last week at their home tournament.
