CALDWELL, Idaho – Lexie Hibler nodded home a golden goal off a corner kick in the 93rd minute on Friday night at Simplot Stadium, giving host College of Idaho a come-from-behind 2-1 win over the Montana State University Billings women's soccer team.
The Yellowjackets (2-4) took the lead in just the second minute on the third goal of the season by freshman
Jordan Roe, but could not find the net again despite out-shooting the Yotes 12-9 in the match. "Despite the result, there were a lot of positives from our team," said MSUB head coach
Stephen Cavallo. "It was a total change in us in terms of our effort, energy, fight, and getting stuck in compared to last night. We started the game really strongly scoring in the first couple of minutes, and I felt we played really well during the first half."
MSUB dominated the game to the tune of a 9-2 shot advantage over the first 45 minutes of play, and settled to take a 1-0 lead into the halftime break. Roe's goal came after her first shot of the match was saved, leading to a corner kick delivered off the foot of
Izzy Menning.
Jillian Hust had her shot attempt blocked, but Roe was there to punch the rebound into the back of the net to put the Yellowjackets in front.
COI goalkeeper Shae Waters made her second save of the game in the 36th minute, denying an on-target try by
Hailee Gertsch that could have doubled MSUB's lead.
The Yotes hinted momentum was shifting to their side coming out of the locker room, winning the first two corner kicks of the second half. The equalizer came in the 63rd minute, when Lily Schlake delivered a free-kick service into the box and watched as Megan Wilkinson tucked away her second goal of the season.
MSUB goalkeeper
Lainey Bosch was kept busy during the second half, as the Yotes took the next four shots in the game and placed two of them on target. The Yellowjackets had a final push to find a late winner in regulation, but shots from
Lexie Bloyder and
Vendela Andersson missed wide before goalkeeper Kylee Atkins denied an on-frame attempt from
Clara Lindberg. "We weren't able to capitalize on our good play, and we let them back into the game off of a cheeky set piece in the second half," Cavallo said. "We lost a tough one in overtime on another set piece."
Hibler's winner came just over two minutes into the overtime period, as she got on the end of a corner-kick service from Payton Anderson to make her first goal of the season count as a winner. "This was a tough road trip for us with back-to-back games," Cavallo said after Thursday's 4-0 setback at Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa, Idaho. "Our team is learning a lot through these first six games on the road. We are looking forward to finishing out the spring season strong starting with our game against Northwest College on Wednesday."
Junior captain
Haylee Gunter was the lone field player to play all 92 minutes in the match, while Menning put in a solid shift of 83 minutes and
Kiley Sandow contributed 71 strong minutes for MSUB. "Kiley, and Izzy probably had their best games in a Yellowjacket jersey," said Cavallo. "Izzy had a very good game for us. We played her in a new position and she responded well to that. She gave us a lot in the attack, and delivered the service on the set piece that led to the goal."
