MINOT, N.D. – For the second straight game three different Montana State University Billings women's soccer players found the back of the net in Friday's 3-0 victory over the University of Mary at Herb Parker Stadium.
"This was a very well-played game from us," said MSUB head coach
Stephen Cavallo. "Our defensive shape was very strong. We moved as a unit, defended as a unit, and overall played a really good game. I was really impressed with the team."
Jordan Roe scored the game-winning goal for the second straight contest, while
Emily Gaines and
Rylee Wiediger each scored the first goal of their collegiate careers. "We are really excited to beat a very good University of Mary team," Cavallo said. "They have been a tough team for us in years passed, and this is our first win since 2014 against them. We played really well defensively today, and eliminated any serious threat. Offensively we took our chances well, got numbers in the box, and were able to create from wide play. It was awesome to see our wingers get so involved."
The Yellowjackets (2-0) protected a 1-0 lead for the majority of the game, until Wiediger added the second in the 82nd minute and Gaines put the game to bed with a penalty kick in the 88th minute. Freshman goalkeeper
Lainey Bosch made a pair of saves and picked up the shutout with a 90-minute performance in her first collegiate start. "Today was fun to watch and fun to play," said Gaines. "It is so great to be a part of a really talented and diverse team. Today's performance showed exactly that. It's not often that you have subs coming on and elevating the game, and that's exactly what we do."
Roe's goal came in the 21st minute, as the freshman finished a shot into the lower-left corner of the net.
Lexie Bloyder followed with her third shot of the opening 30 minutes of play, this time prompting a save out of UM goalkeeper Madisyn Waltman.
Bosch helped keep the lead in MSUB's hands in the 36th minute, as she denied an on-target attempt off the foot of Kayla Alcott. The save came less than two minutes after a shot from Emma Davies carried high over the crossbar, as the Marauders started showing signs of life offensively late in the opening half.
The Yellowjacket defense limited the Marauders to just five shots throughout the match, as the team completed its second straight decisive result after a 3-0 blanking of Rocky on Feb. 19 in the season debut. Mary fell to 1-2 on the season with the defeat.
"Our team is super supportive both on and off the field, and we continue to show up whether it's a 5:45 a.m. practice or a 7 p.m. game," Gaines said. "Today we worked really hard to get a shutout and win, and it feels good."
THE BUZZ: Gaines was named the St. Vincent Healthcare Player of the Game…five different MSUB players have found the back of the net through the team's first two games of the 2021 spring season.
