BILLINGS, Mont. – Meeting for the second time in four days on Saturday at Herb Klindt Field, the Montana State University Billings and Rocky Mountain College men's soccer teams battled to a 0-0, double-overtime draw.
The teams had 10 shots apiece in the evenly-contested affair, but neither could find the net in 110 minutes of action.
The Yellowjackets nearly got ahead early on in the match, when a shot off the foot of
Paul Cuevas was cleared off the back line by the RMC defense.
Austin Shafer also had the first of his two shot attempts in the game denied. "We started the game off on the right foot with two early chances," said MSUB head coach
Thomas Chameraud. "After that we became a bit too predictable and our movement was too slow. We could see that the game on Wednesday was still in our legs, but we need to get back into the in-season rhythm when we will play twice per week."
Other big chances for the Yellowjackets included a shot by
Tybalt Thornberry in the second half, which was saved by Ryan Cornwall. He and fellow goalkeeper Luke Turner had a pair of saves apiece for the Bears.
Goalkeeper
Aleksandar Garza made his collegiate debut on Saturday, stopping both shots that the Bears put on frame. Freshman goalkeeper
Lars Funk had the three saves required of him during his 65 minutes on the pitch, as the duo combined to complete the shutout between the posts. "The clean sheet is definitely a positive note from this game," Chameraud said. "Now we will rest up, make some adjustments, and prepare for our game against Rocky on March 11."
The Bears held a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks in the match, four of which came during the second half as the hosts had slight momentum in the final 45 minutes of regulation. Neither team had a serious scoring opportunity during the overtime halves, settling for their first draw of the year.
MSUB's lineup was anchored by seniors, with
Luca Battistotti,
Shantik Bedrosian, and Bradley Lowes each playing a significant part in the match. "Brad's hard-working attitude helped us stay in shape defensively," Chameraud credited the defensive midfielder. "He also went forward to bring support to his teammates."
THE BUZZ: Lowes was picked as the St. Vincent Healthcare Player of the Game…MSUB remained undefeated against RMC in counting contests, at 5-0-1 all-time and 2-0-1 in road matches.
