ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Complete domination of the first and third quarters and steady defensive pressure throughout the game helped No. 7 University of Alaska Anchorage stifle Montana State University Billings 80-33 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's basketball at Alaska Airlines Center Saturday night. The Seawolves moved to 8-0 in the conference and extended their current win streak to 13 games. Meanwhile, the Yellowjackets fell to 4-4 and split their weekend road trip to the state of Alaska.
"Anchorage was very impressive tonight," said MSUB head coach
Kevin Woodin. "We knew we had to handle their defensive pressure and shoot the ball consistently and we didn't do either of those things well enough. They are a talented team and they executed very well."
UAA shot 79-percent (11-for-14) in the opening 10 minutes and held MSUB to just two field goals on 12 attempts. The Yellowjackets snapped a period of more than six minutes without a basket in the opening minutes of the second quarter and seemed to be finding their stride offensively but the Seawolves quickly answered with an 10-3 run to lead 43-19 at halftime. MSUB's major offensive struggles continued in the third quarter where they were outscored 23-0.
Jeanann Lemelin ended the scoreless drought with a basket 56 seconds into the fourth quarter but the Seawolves continued to spread the ball around to close out the game.
The Yellowjackets scored fewer than 40 points for the first time since 2007 (University of Incarnate Word, L 65-37). MSUB's all-time record for fewest points in a game is 32 points (Tarkio College, 1977).
Nine players scored five or more points for Alaska Anchorage. Lauren Johnson set a new career high and led the Seawolves with 16 points and five assists. Stephanie Jackson and Nicole Pinkney each had nine points. Yazmeen Goo marked eight points and five assists.
The Seawolves shot 50-percent (29-for-58) from the field and 50-percent (11-for-22) from beyond the arc. UAA also grabbed 39 rebounds and connected for 21 assists and 12 steals.
The Yellowjackets managed a 23-percent shooting percentage (12-for-53) and made 17-percent (5-for-29) of 3-point attempts. MSUB pulled down 30 rebounds and had four steals. The 'Jackets committed 22 turnovers compared to UAA's 14.
UP NEXT: The Yellowjackets (9-8, 4-4) return to Billings to face Seattle Pacific University and Saint Martin's University next week at Alterowitz Gymnasium. Alaska Anchorage (18-1, 8-0) improved to 9-0 at home. UAA will play Western Washington and Simon Fraser on the road beginning Thursday night.
"It's been a long couple of weeks but we were able to come out with a split on two tough back-to-back trips," said Woodin. "We are really looking forward to playing at home next week."
