BILLINGS, Mont. – The Montana State University Billings Men's basketball team defeated Central Washington University in dramatic fashion as senior guard
Tyler Green hit a buzzer beating three point shot from 38 feet away.
In this Great Northwest Athletic Conference game, The Yellowjackets (7-7, 2-4 GNAC) battled relentlessly with Central Washington University (8-6, 1-5 GNAC) the entire game needing over time to settle the affair.
Â
Mirror images of each other for almost the entirety of the game, the two teams went into halftime 42-42. The two teams combined for 10 ties and seven lead changes.
Â
In an intense second half, MSUB led most of the way and was up by as much as seven, but the Wildcats fought and clawed their way back over and over never allowing MSUB out of paws reach. MSUB had a chance to win the game in regulation tied at 80 as
Psalm Maduakor launched a three point shot as time expired from the corner only to come up just short and send the game into the fateful over time period.
Caught in a dire situation and just when it seemed like all hope was lost, MSUB found themselves down by six with 22 seconds left. The old adage "you have to make your free throws" played a major role in the waning seconds. CWU would only convert 1-4 free throws in the final 15 seconds and in so doing, failed to put the game away.
A layup by
Chrishon Dixon with 15 seconds left made it 90-86. Then a quick timeout by head coach
Mick Durham and a foul put CWU back to the line. Making one of two, CWU was up 91-86. A Three point shot from Maduakor with six seconds reaming gave MSUB a chance at 91-89. Needing to make both to seal the game, CWU failed to make either free throws giving MSUB had one last glimmer of hope which came in the form of Green.
Â
With 3.6 left on the clock, Green took three dribbles from a
Jordan Lehrer pass and stepped into a 38 foot prayer with 0.3 left. As the clock struck zero, the buzzer sounded, the shot banked off the glass and through the basket for the game winner players only dream of.
Â
Players and coaches rushed to the floor to greet their teammate, hoist him in the air and proudly send Alterowitz into a state of shock and awe the kind of which has not been seen in the gym for some time.

Â
"I wasn't hitting my shots this game but I guess hit the one that mattered," said Green "That's just something you mess around with in the gym and I wish we could say we drew that one up. The win is huge for us and hopefully this gives us momentum going forward."
Â
"I think I knew we had a chance to get a shot off and Tyler got a good look at it," said Durham. "Probably not a great chance of it going in, but it was a great finish and a great win. "I thought it was a heck of a basketball game. We had some tough match ups with them and they got a little separation but we hung in there and we always say it's never over till it's over."
Â
Green would finish the night with nine points six rebounds and three assists. Dixon finished with a new career high of 22 points and added five rebounds. Dixon had 17 first half points tying his previous career high for an entire game which he netted one week ago against Concordia University Portland.
Â
Zharon Richmond also had 22 points and
Brendan Howard finished with 21.
Â
Tariq Woody led all players with 29 points for CWU as the big man had his way for much of the game in the paint.
Â
Player of the Game: For his new career high,
Chrishon Dixon was named the St. Vincent Healthcare Player of the game.
Â
WHAT'S AHEAD: The Yellowjackets hit the road again to take on Saint Martin's University and the league leading Seattle Pacific University Falcons.
