BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Montana State University Billings softball team combined for just a single hit in a doubleheader against Western Washington University Saturday afternoon at Vikings field in a pair of Great Northwest Athletic Conference games.
The 'Jackets failed to muster their best effort in either game and WWU pitcher Mackinlee Sellevold threw a no-hitter in game two and a complete game shutout in game one to clamp the Yellowjacket offense throughout the day.
"It was a tough one today," said MSUB head coach
Jessica Rayman. "There's no other way to put it. Tomorrow is a new day so we have to bounce back."
The Vikings outscored MSUB 14-0 combined and recorded 20 hits to supplement Sellevold's incredible pitching performances.
Game 1 – MSU Billings 0, Western Washington 10 (five innings)
The Yellowjackets mustered just one hit in a 10-0 five inning loss to Western Washington University in the opening game of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference schedule at Viking Field Saturday afternoon. Western Washington scored early and often, capped by a six run third inning.
Sellevold pitched five-innings for a complete game shutout for WWU and struck out 12. Sellevold allowed one hit and walked one in a nearly flawless effort as she picked up her sixth win of the season.
Maddy Lincoln (3-5) took the loss for MSUB after allowing 10 runs (seven earned), nine hits, walked three, and struck out two.
After a hit by pitch and a bunt single allowed two runners on base, Emily Benson drove a Lincoln pitch to the gap in right-center for a double in the bottom of the first to give WWU a 2-0 lead.
The Vikings added two additional runs in the second inning to take a 4-0 advantage. Kira Doan led-off and reached on an error charged to
Cailee Morgan at second. The 'Jackets took care of the lead runner on a pair of fielder's choice plays to get two outs. Jackie Lucido was then hit by a pitch and Mackenzie Palmer singled in a run. Sellevold reached base on an error charged to Sydney Pollard at shortstop and Lucido scored.
In the third Western Washington sent nine to the plate and scored six runs on six hits. Sellevold's double into the right field corner scored a pair and the third fielding error charged to Yellowjackets allowed another run to score.
Morgan Quimby provided the only hit of the game for the Yellowjackets.
Rylan Austin also reached base with a walk. It was the fourth loss in a row for the MSU Billings softball team.
Game 2 – MSU Billings 0, Western Washington 8 (six innings)
Mackinlee Sellevold threw the 25
th no-hitter in GNAC history for Western Washington in game two and the Vikings victimized MSU Billings 4-0 to sweep Saturday's doubleheader at Viking Field. The senior from Everett, Washington threw six complete innings and faced 21 MSUB hitters. She struck out nine, walked one and picked up her second complete game shutout of the day.
Sellevold (7-5) out-pitched
Haley Couch (1-2) who took the loss for MSUB. Couch went 5.2 innings and allowed eight runs (six earned) on 11 hits, walked zero and struck out two.
Mackenzie Palmer went 3-for-4 to lead the Viking offense and had two runs batted in. Cylie Richards went 2-for-3 with three runs batted in for WWU. The Yellowjackets remained stagnant against one of the conference's top pitchers. Only three MSUB hitters did not strike out at least one time in game two.
Western Washington scored three runs on four hits in the bottom of the first inning. Sellevold doubled to center field to score Palmer and Richards also doubled down the right field line to bring in Sellevold from third. After two scoreless innings, the Vikings added a run in the fourth when Rylie Wales hit a one out double to right center and Rachel Christiansen followed with a double to pick up the RBI.
After a scoreless fifth, Western Washington added four additional runs in the sixth to cap the game at six innings. The four game series continues against Western Washington when the teams square off in a doubleheader at 12:00 p.m. first pitch at Viking Field.
The Yellowjackets (6-9, 0-2 GNAC) have lost five straight games. Western Washington (8-5, 2-0 GNAC) won its third game in a row and have not lost at home this season.
