No. 3 Clan rain on ‘Jackets 4-0 Thursday

BURNABY, B.C. – Scoring three of its four goals in the opening 20 minutes, the No. 3 Simon Fraser University men's soccer team rolled to a 4-0 victory over visiting Montana State University Billings in a soggy Great Northwest Athletic Conference affair Thursday evening at Terry Fox Field.

Four different Clan players found the net, as the third-ranked team in the NCAA Division II kept its record perfect at 7-0 and began its conference slate with a mark of 1-0 in league play.

MSUB snapped a four-game unbeaten streak with the loss, falling to 3-4-1 overall on the year and 0-1 in GNAC action.

The Yellowjackets came close to taking a 1-0 lead less than 10 minutes into the game, after earning a free kick in the attacking third. Guillaume Kremer drilled a curling ball into the 18-yard box, and SFU goalkeeper Luciano Trasolini had to lay out to for a diving save on a redirected header shot by Luca Battistotti.

Though the early free kick gave MSUB a chance to score, it cost the 'Jackets as a red card was shown to forward Ricardo Palomino leaving them with 10 men for the remaining 80 minutes of play.

The Clan were quick to counter, as Camara scored less than two minutes later by tapping in a cross by Connor Glennon from the right side of the box. After an immediate giveaway by the 'Jackets on the ensuing kickoff, SFU was awarded a penalty kick after a tackle inside the 18-yard box. GNAC-leading scorer Matteo Polisi stepped up to the spot and rolled home a 12-yard strike into the lower left corner of the net. It was the senior's seventh goal of the season.

Dzenan Bezdrob came inches away from making it 3-0 in the 17th minute, as his shot from inside the six-yard box missed just high after a well-timed run. The senior made up for his miss two minutes later however,

carrying the ball into the box on the left side and firing a left-footed shot into the far upper corner of the net.

The Yellowjackets recovered over the rest of the opening half, and managed to get the game to the break with the score line still reading 3-0.

Earning a free kick midway through the second half, Polisi nearly scored his eighth goal of the season. His right-footed attempt from 25 yards curled around the wall and shook the framework as it rattled off the right goal post.

MSUB goalkeeper Ludvig Rhodin followed with a nice save on a corner kick by the Clan, sliding to corral a low on-target shot after a cross into the box. Rhodin wound up with five saves in the match, as SFU placed nine of its 24 shots on target.

Quinn Dawson added a finishing touch in the 81st minute, blasting a one-time effort into the upper-v after a loose ball from the box rolled towards him at 20 yards out.

The early stop by Trasolini was the only one he had to make in the match, as MSUB managed just three total shots in the 90-minute affair. The shutout was Trasolini's fifth of the season, and SFU upped its remarkable goal differential to 25-2 through its seven victories this season.

THE BUZZ: Kremer was tabbed the St. Vincent Healthcare Player of the Game…MSUB is now 1-20-3 all-time against SFU and is yet to win a match in Burnaby at 0-11-1 in road matches…Palomino will miss Saturday's match against Western Washington after receiving the red card.

NEXT UP: The 'Jackets head south to take on Western Washington University in another GNAC contest on Saturday. Kickoff against the Vikings is scheduled for 7 p.m. Pacific/8 p.m. Mountain at Harrington Field in Bellingham, Washington, and live coverage will be available online through the MSUB Stretch Internet portal here.
