BILLINGS, Mont. – Mikey Hatfield hit a game winning 3-point shot from the corner to send the California State University Dominguez Hills Toros over the Montana State University Billings Yellowjackets 75-73 in a non-conference MSUB Thanksgiving Tournament game Friday night at Alterowitz Gymnasium.
The game featured 11 lead changes and the Yellowjackets appeared to have found the advantage for the final time after
Zack Rollins hit a mid-range jumper to go ahead 73-72.
Melvin Newbern Jr. came down with a defensive rebound with five seconds remaining on the ensuing possession and immediately called timeout. MSU Billings inbounded the ball to
Tyler Green who was quickly enveloped by a pair of CSUDH defenders. A jump ball was called and possession reversed, giving Hatfield the final word with three seconds left.
Green led MSUB players in scoring with 19 points on 6-for-16 shooting. Green also went 4-for-8 from beyond the arc and made 3-of-3 free throws.
Zharon Richmond (15 pts), Rollins (12 pts.), and
Melvin Newbern Jr. (11 pts) also made it into double figures for MSUB.
Jayvon Brown matched Green's scoring total with 19 points for CSUDH on 6-for-13 shooting. Brown went 2-for-6 from 3-point range. Hatfield had 12 points and a pair of 3-pointers including the most important shot of the game with 1.4 seconds remaining.
The Yellowjackets (2-3) led the score 40-39 at halftime and shot 49-percent on the night (27-for-55). MSUB also went 7-for-16 from beyond the arc at a 43-percent clip. Cal State Dominguez Hills (2-2) nearly mirrored MSUB's offensive statistics and shot 47-percent from the field (28-for-59). The Toros went 9-for-24 from long range (37-percent) and outscored the Yellowjackets off the bench 36-21. Nine points became the largest lead achieved by either team in the game and it was garnered by the Toros 11-2 in the opening minutes.
The Toros began the game with an 11-2 advantage but the 'Jackets quickly dissolved the deficit and tied the game 34-34 with 5:11 to go in the first half. Richmond made a layup at the buzzer to send the Yellowjackets to the locker room with a one point lead. The opening minutes of the second half were strong for MSUB as they extended the lead to eight. Then costly turnovers and an improved shooting percentage from the Toros evened the game once again.
MSU Billings made 21 turnovers versus 18 for CSUDH. Richmond played 28 minutes off the bench and shot 50-percent from the field (6-for-12). Hatfield had a career high four steals for the Toros and Brown came off the bench to play 23 minutes and score 19 points.
The Yellowjackets defeated University of Mary, Minot State University, and Rocky Mountain College (exhibition) before falling they fell to Dominguez Hills Friday night. Meanwhile the Toros rebounded after losing to Dominican University last weekend.
UP NEXT: The 'Jackets return to action on Saturday when they play Black Hills State University (1-2) at 7:30 p.m. at Alterowitz Gymnasium. The team will open conference play at home against Alaska Fairbanks on November 27 at 7 p.m.
