‘Jackets sink 18 threes in 95-82 win over Eagles

BILLINGS, Mont. – A great shooting night from beyond the arc guided the Montana State University Yellowjackets (5-0) to another victory on Tuesday night as the Yellowjackets defeated the Chadron State Eagles 95-82 in Alterowitz Gym. The Yellowjackets hit a season beat 18 three-pointers in the victory and finished the night shooting 54 percent from the floor.

"I thought we had an exceptional shooting night," head coach Jamie Stevens said after the win. "I am happy with the way we competed on the boards and moved the ball within our offense tonight. We had a few turnovers in the second half that kept us from building on our lead but those are some of the things you have to work through when you have a new group of guys."

Sven Jeuschede matched his career-best in scoring total with 17 points in the game paired with six rebounds and two assists in the win. Jeuschede hit five threes also matching his career-high.13077

The Yellowjackets had four starters reach double figures in the victory led by Tyler Green with 21. Kendall Denham was the first player to reach double-digits after scoring 11 of the first 14 points for MSUB. Zack Rollins finished a rebound shy of a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds.

"I feel like we have a lot of offensive weapons that can do good things for us," Stevens added. "We still have some guys that are learning to play at the four-year college level and learning how to work their game into our system but we feel that we have a team that can beat you in a lot of different ways."

The Yellowjackets rejected six shots in the first half matching their season-best total before adding another block from Zharon Richmond in the second half. Richmond finished with three rejections, eight points and six rebounds. Kamal Tall had an efficient night as he shot 4-for-5 from the field with a block and five rebounds. The MSUB posts connected on a big one-handed slam as Richmond found Tall streaking to the basket for a break-away dunk.

Zharon Richmond led the 'Jackets
with three blocks in Tuesday's win.

A 14-4 run gave MSUB an early advantage to start the game thanks to Denham's layup followed by his trio of trifectas and a three from Green. The 'Jackets opened a 15-point advantage after a Daniel Shedden layup put the 'Jackets up 23-8. The Eagles answered in the latter portion the first half with a 12-0 run tying the game at 31 but that would be the last time MSUB didn't hold a lead in the game.

Jeuschede, Green and Rollins put the finishing touches on the victory in the second half as they combined to shoot 6-for-12 from beyond the arc. Green has now scored 20-or-more points in four of his first five games with the Yellowjackets.

David Simental was a perfect 3-for-3 in the game and scored nine points on two threes and a free throw. He also recorded the first block of his career as he stopped a fade-away jumper that resulted in the fast-break in which he drew the foul.

UP NEXT: The Yellowjackets will travel to Alaska after the Thanksgiving break to open Great Northwest Athletic Conference play with the University of Alaska Anchorage (3-2) on Thursday, Nov. 30 at 7:30 p.m. Alaska time. They will follow that with a matchup in Fairbanks against the University of Alaska on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Alaska time before returning to Billings. Both games can be watch via the MSUB Stretch Internet Portal.
