Preview: MSUB women finish season at CWU Saturday

BILLINGS, Mont. – Wrapping up its 2017 season on the road Saturday, the Montana State University Billings women's soccer team has one more match on its schedule.

The Yellowjackets (3-11-2, 2-7-2 GNAC) will take on Central Washington University (1-11-3, 0-8-2) at noon Mountain time Saturday at the CWU Soccer Field in Ellensburg, Wash. Live video and live statistics will be available for the match online through MSUB's Stretch Internet portal here.

"We are looking to end the season with a positive performance against Central," said MSUB head coach Stephen Cavallo. "From a record standpoint this year hasn't been what we hoped, but we still have a lot to play for in these final 90 minutes. I just want to see us put together a performance on the field that we can be proud of, and end the season on a high to take us into the winter."

MSUB split a pair of Great Northwest Athletic Conference matches last week, defeating Saint Martin's University 4-1 last Thursday before a 3-0 loss at Seattle Pacific University on Saturday. The 'Jackets enter this week in sixth place in the conference standings with eight points, and are 1-5-1 in road matches this season.

Alexa Iacolucci leads the team with
five goals and 12 total points this fall.

IACOLUCCI CONTINUES STRONG SEASON: Sophomore Alexa Iacolucci had her first career game with a goal and an assist last week at Saint Martin's, helping her maintain her status as MSUB's offensive leader this fall. The midfielder's five goals and 12 total points are the most on the team, and her point total is tied for the 10th highest in the GNAC. Iacolucci has started all 16 matches, and is second on the team with 1,261 minutes played.

SPANG CLOSES CAREER: Saturday will be the 54th and final start for senior Jessica Spang, who will play in her 62nd game overall in her four-year career. Spang scored against Saint Martin's last week, giving her 10 career goals to go along with nine assists for 29 points. Entering the week, Spang has the 15th-highest point total in school history and is one of just 16 players to reach double figures in goals in a career.

GRIMSHAW GETS BACK ON SCORE SHEET: Slotting home her second goal of the season last week, freshman Amanda Grimshaw was one of three different goal scorers for the 'Jackets against SMU. Her minute totals of 48 against SMU and 50 against SPU were her second and third highest of the season, as she has seen increased time on the field over the past two weeks. Grimshaw's other goal came against Colorado Christian on Sept. 10, when she played a season-high 60 minutes.

HARDER CRACKS TOP-10: With nine total saves last week, freshman goalkeeper Erinn Harder bumped her season total to 66 which is the ninth-highest single-season total in MSUB history. Harder enters the final week of play No. 4 in the conference in total saves and No. 3 with an average of 5.50 saves per game.

4 IS THE MAGIC NUMBER: When the offense is clicking, the Yellowjackets have a tendency to score in bunches. All of MSUB's wins this year have been by the score of 4-1, and three different players have found the net in two of those games. The one-sided wins have been the only multi-goal games of the year for MSUB however, which ranks sixth in the conference with 17 goals in 16 matches (1.06 per game).

The Wildcats are enduring a tough 2017 season coming off one of the best years in school history with last fall's NCAA tournament appearance. CWU's only win this season was a 2-1 result against Northwest University on Sept. 7, and the team has lost six games in-a-row since a 1-1 draw against Saint Martin's on Sept. 30.

CWU plays at Concordia on Thursday night before hosting MSUB in the final match of the season. Saturday will be the only meeting of the year between the 'Jackets and 'Cats.

Senior Mackenzie Nolte is one of the top offensive players in the conference, and she leads the team with eight goals and 17 points entering the week. Nolte has started all 15 matches, and is tied for fifth overall in the GNAC with her point total.

Sophia Kennan is the only other Wildcat with multiple goals this season, finding the net three times in 13 games. CWU has been out-scored 37-15 overall.

Seniors Whitney Lowe and Abbie Litka are the two other players on the roster besides Nolte to have started every match, and the former ranks second behind Nolte with 1,235 minutes played.

In goal, CWU has used four different keepers with Emily Holt handling the majority of the work. Holt is second in the conference with 82 saves, and has played 1,190 minutes in 14 starts.

The Series: In an evenly matched series overall, CWU has a slight upper hand at 13-11-1 against MSUB. The 'Jackets are 4-7-1 all-time in games played in Ellensburg, and CWU has won the last two games between the sides.

Last Time Out: The 'Cats claimed a 2-1 win over MSUB on Oct. 15 at Yellowjacket Field, after a 3-0 triumph in Washington Oct. 1.
