DELTA, B.C. - Needing extra innings in the second game, MSU Billings won both games of a doubleheader against the University of British Columbia by scores of 9-5 and 9-6 (8 innings) deep into the night at North Delta Park.
Montana State University Billings (7-12) rallied for three runs in the eighth inning of the second game, ultimately coming away with a sweep of the University of British Columbia (0-7) Tuesday evening.
The Yellowjackets were on the field until almost midnight finishing up the second game, but with the two wins, MSUB stopped a five game skid and picked up some momentum for a doubleheader tomorrow against Seattle University.
Game 1: UBC 5, MSUB 9Four runs in the first inning had the Yellowjackets jump out ahead as MSU Billings finished the first game of the doubleheader 9-5.
Switching things up, in the second spot, right fielder
Heather Tracy went 3-for-3 in the first game with three runs. Lead-off hitter
Cori Gammon was 2-for-3 with a RBI.
In the first inning MSUB picked up four runs on three hits. Tracy kicked things off with a double into right center.
Bella Rovens walked and
Cameron Cassinelli reached base on an error by the third baseman.
With the bases loaded, designated hitter
Nicole Tiffany struck a sacrifice fly that brought in Tracy from third. Third baseman
Ryland Estrada hit a 2-RBI double down the right field line for two runs. A single from
Myrissa Prince scored Estrada for the last run of the game.
UBC tied the score with one run in the second and three in the third inning, but MSUB fought back with three runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
Two singles from Gammon and one from Tracy and a triple from
Haley Rowe led to the three runs that put MSUB up 7-6. The Yellowjackets added two insurance runs at the top of the seventh inning.
Shortstop
Jessica Bagnell hit a single down the right field line, Gammon walked, and Tracy singled. Rovens plated a run with a single and
Taylor Tokach finished the scoring with a sacrifice fly into right that sent Gammon across home plate.
MSUB outhit UBC 11-9. The Yellowjackets left 12 runners on base, but UBC was just under with nine.
In the circle for MSUB, Tokach (2-2) tossed four innings, scattering seven hits, and allowing three runs. For the first time this season, Cassinelli entered the pitching circle for the Yellowjackets. In three innings of work, the sophomore scattered two hits and allowed no runs to finish the game.
Game 2: MSUB 9, UBC 6 (8 innings)The Yellowjackets needed extra innings in Game 2, but were able to tack on three runs in the eighth and hold the Thunderbirds without any more for the win in the second game.
Heading into the seventh inning both teams were tied at two runs each. At the top of the inning, MSUB added four runs. Bagnell singled to right field, Gammon walked, and Rovens singled to load the bases. With a lot of speed on the bases, Cassinelli came through with a bases clearing triple into left center. A single from Estrada brought in Cassinelli from third for the fourth run of the inning.
UBC added four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game.
Rowe was sent to second base at the start of the eighth inning for the international tiebreaker rule. Bagnell reached first on an error and Rowe raced around the bags to home plate for the first run of the inning. Gammon sent Bagnell to third base on a sacrifice bunt. Tracy cleared a triple that scored Gammon, and Rovens brought in Tracy for the third run of the inning.
MSU Billings was able to hold the Thunderbirds without a run in the bottom of the inning for the win.
Tiffany, Cassinelli, Estrada, and
Myrissa Prince each had two hits in the second game with the latter three all recording doubles. Cassinelli had three RBI's and Prince two.
MSUB was outhit 12-11, but UBC left 13 runners on base with MSUB stranding eight.
Cassinelli began the game in the circle for MSUB scattering eight hits and allowing two earned runs in 4 and 1/3 innings.
Amanda Roark (1-6) came in for 3 and 2/3 innings earning the win for MSUB scattering four with two earned runs.
