LAS VEGAS. - The Yellowjackets led by as many as 22 points in the game, ending with a 74-62 win over Tarleton State during MSUB's final game of the South Point Holiday Hoops Classic Saturday.
MSU Billings (6-4) shot 46.9 percent from the field, making nine 3-pointers in the game.
Monica Grimsrud had four 3-pointers in the contest as the forward finished with 16 total points. The senior from Montana City, Mont., was named to the all-tournament team for her efforts across the two days. Five Yellowjackets scored points in the double-digits in the contest against Tarleton State, a stark contrast to MSUB's first game yesterday at the tournament in Las Vegas.

Janiel Olson secured her first double-double of the season with 14 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Point guard
Rylee Kane tied Olson with 14 points while dishing out a game-high seven assists. Junior
Alisha Breen scored 13 points, including a steady 7-8 from the free-throw line. Sophomore
Vanessa Stavish added 11 points, shooting 3-4 from the 3-point arc.
MSUB made 12 steals in the game and outrebounded the TexAnns 34-29.
"I thought it was a complete team effort tonight," MSUB head coach
Kevin Woodin said. "The entire team was very focused and aggressive from the beginning of the game. I also thought we won the game with our efforts in the first half. We shot the ball from the perimeter very well tonight which made a big difference for us. I thought in the first half Monica's 3-point shooting was very good. In the game Rylee was very aggressive off the ball screens and made the correct reads off the ball as she played very good in the game as well. Alisha and Janiel were really solid the whole night. We had another game with some excellent bench play; Vanessa made some really good outside shots for us."
Tarleton State (6-4) closed out the game shooting 36.5 percent from the field. The team made five of their nine 3-point buckets in the final 10 minutes of the game as the TexAnns scored almost as many points in the fourth quarter as in the first half alone.
The TexAnns drew the deficit down to single digits at the five minute mark, but MSUB countered with five straight points on a layup from Breen and a 3-point play from Kane to push the Yellowjackets back up by 14.
Not going away, Tarleton State added four points to close the score to 10 points with two minutes left. Three crucial offensive rebounds kept the ball on MSUB's side. Double turnovers from both teams put the ball into the hands of Tarleton State. The TexAnns missed two 3-pointers before Olson grabbed the rebound with one minute remaining.
Stavish made her second steal of the game which led to a layup from Breen. The Yellowjackets' defense shut down a last attempt by Tarleton at a basket, closing out the game for the 12-point win.
A trio of players from Tarleton State finished with points in the double-digits. Raven McGrath led the team's efforts with 16 points, including four 3-point baskets, and five rebounds. Bailey Wipff had 15 points. Morgan Ashmore contributed 10 points and seven assists.
MSU Billings won the battle in the paint over Tarleton State 26-18. The 'Jackets also finished ahead with 20-14 points off of turnovers and 14-10 second chance points.
A layup from Breen and one from Wipff opened the scoring during the contest. Double 3-pointers from Grimsrud started a 3-point flurry from the 'Jackets in the first half. MSUB made eight of its nine total 3-point baskets in the first 20 minutes of the contest.
Good defense had MSUB searching for a look at the basket, but Kane finished a low count on the shot clock by driving in to make a jump shot to tie the game at 12.
Stavish joined the MSUB outside game with her first 3-pointer of the contest giving MSUB a 3-point lead with three minutes left in the first quarter. Another 3-pointer from Grimsrud widened the gap to six points, 18-12, at the end of the first period.
Another 3-point try from Stavish rattled around the rim, but bounced out to start the second quarter. On a travelling call on Tarleton, Stavish made good on her third try of the game for a 21-12 advantage.
A steal from Olson led to a
Marissa Van Atta break-away. She was fouled on the attempted layup and made both of her free-throws. Olson scored her first points of the game with a dribble and drive to the basket from the outside corner.
Olson buried a 3-pointer on the next possession for MSUB. Breen made a huge hustle stop on defense to give the Yellowjackets the ball. Junior
Tiana Hanson tried a fade-away jump shot that went wide, but another good defensive stop from the TexAnns' side of the court put the ball back in the hands of MSUB.
The TexAnns closed the margin to 10 on a jump shot from McGrath. Grimsrud buried her fourth 3-pointer of the game to push the Yellowjackets above the 30-point mark. A dribble and drive layup from Kane led to a 3-point play with the and-one basket.
Kane grabbed the ball off the top of an inbounds play and continued to the basket for her second layup of the game. Two free throws from Wipff added two points to the score board for Tarleton.
On a steal from MSUB, Kane was fouled on the shot attempt from the 3-point arc. The sophomore finished 2-3 from the line. Solid defense from the Yellowjackets gave MSU Billings one more try at the basket before the break. With two seconds on the clock, Grimsrud dished a lengthy pass to Olson who went up for a wide 3-pointer that just beat the buzzer, putting the Yellowjackets ahead 41-25 at half-time.
MSUB finished the first half shooting 13-23 from the field for 56.5 percent. The Yellowjackets were 8-11 from 3-point territory, picking up four buckets from Grimsrud and two each from Olson and Stavish.
Grimsrud went back to work at the start of the second half on the 3-point arc. She was fouled on the attempt and made 2-3 for the 'Jackets.
Wipff countered an attempt from MSUB with a layup on the TexAnns' side of the court. Turnovers plagued both teams during the first five minutes of the third quarter. Grimsrud missed her first 3-pointer of the game, but Breen added to the lead with a layup and the free-throw shot after for 46-27.
Stavish connected for her third 3-pointer of the game. Wipff made two free-throws and Meagan O'Dell made a 3-pointer for the TexAnns for five straight points. Breen countered with a layup for the Yellowjackets.
MSUB finished the third quarter with free-throws from Olson and Breen for a 54-38 lead.
The TexAnns made a push down the stretch. Tarleton State picked up 3-pointers from three players and a layup from Wipff to close the deficit to 10.
Free throws from Kane had the 'Jackets back up by 12, but another long ball from McGrath threatened again. Kane made a big layup in traffic and on the free-throw after the foul drove the score up 70-56. Defense from Tarleton gave the TexAnns a free layup, but Stavish pulled up for two points just inside the 3-point arc.
MSUB grabbed the ball on the Tarleton end, but was unable to convert on the possession. The TexAnns committed their own turnover and this time Kane dished the ball to Grimsrud under the hoop for two points. With under a minute left, the Yellowjackets held the ball on their side to close out the game.
THE BUZZ: Grimsrud earns St. Vincent Healthcare Player of the Game honors...this is the first time this season MSUB has had five players score double-digit points...this is the first time this season Olson has been over 10 rebounds in a game.
"It was nice to end the year on a victory before our winter break," Woodin said. "I am excited that our team has a rest period before we go back to work to face the Alaska teams on the road."
UP NEXT: MSUB takes the mandated NCAA winter break off from practice and competition next week. The Yellowjackets return to the court Dec. 31 at Alaska Anchorage.
