POMONA, Calif. - The MSUB women's basketball team finished 12 of their 23 3-point shots en route to a 68-51 win over NCAA west region opponent Cal Poly Pomona in Kellogg Arena Friday.

Topping her career-high by one, sophomore Vanessa Stavish was 5-6 from the outside as the Yellowjackets buried a dozen outside buckets in the win over the Broncos. The native of Frenchtown, Mont., and St. Vincent Healthcare Player of the Game, finished with a team-high 15 points on 83.3 percent shooting, adding in an assist and a steal on the big night for the forward.

Janiel Olson added three treys and Monica Grimsrud and Alisha Breen both had a pair of 3-pointers in the win. Breen finished with 12 points and four assists while Olson had 13 points and led the team in rebounds with eight. Grimsrud shot 3-7 from the field and had five rebounds.

Point guard Rylee Kane ended the night with five assists and eight points. The sophomore created a lot of scoring opportunities in the second half driving into the paint after MSUB opened up the inside after an effective first half shooting from the 3-point arc.

For MSU Billings (1-2), 36 of the final 68 points came from the outside.

"It was an important win for us tonight," MSUB head coach Kevin Woodin said. "I was extremely pleased with how we competed. We got off to a great start and it was nice to get the lead early. I though defensively our players worked extremely hard and communicated well."

Kane, Breen, and junior Tiana Hanson all contributed six each from the free-throw line as Cal Poly Pomona (0-3) committed 25 team fouls in the contest and had two players foul out. The Yellowjackets made good on 22-28 chances from the charity strip while CPP was 13-18.

"Offensively tonight we shot the ball well, especially from the 3-point line, making the extra pass," Woodin continued. "Down the stretch we were able to make a lot of free-throws to seal the win. I thought we protected the ball well too while our scoring came from a very balanced attack."

Grimsrud opened the scoring with a deep 3-pointer from the right corner. The teams battled possessions and rebounds with both the Broncos and Yellowjackets unable to put away their early shots. After her one miss of the night, Stavish drained a trey for a 6-4 lead six minutes into the game.

Out of the first quarter media timeout, Stavish made another 3-pointer bucket to open a 6-point lead. Both teams remained dry for the next three minutes. Grimsrud collected two points after an offensive rebound and put back. At the end of the first quarter MSUB held a 13-4 lead.

Olson answered a pair of free-throws by Priscilla Brooks with another MSUB 3-point bucket. Sparked by the two free-throws from Jordyn Shane, Cal Poly Pomona embarked on an 8-0 run to climb back within six points at 23-17.

With 12 seconds left in the first half, the 4-minute dry spell from the Yellowjackets was broken by Stavish as she settled into another shot from the arc to keep MSUB ahead by nine at the half 26-17.

The Yellowjackets opened the second half of play with a quartet of 3-point buckets. Building the lead back up to double-digits, Olson drained her second of the night followed by the second of the game from Breen before Grimsrud hit a pair.

Making the 11^th 3-point basket and fifth of the night for the sophomore, Stavish nailed a long 3-point shot to open up a 38-24 lead over the Broncos.

After Erin Hagan made good on two free-throws for CPP, Hanson followed that up with all four of her free-throw shots on two fouls by the Broncos in the paint.

Hanson added three more points after converting on another free-throw shot when she was fouled on an inbounds pass from Olson. A back court cut from Marissa Van Atta resulted in a layup after she made a turn-around shot off a feed from Kane.

Shane made her first 3-point shot of the night to keep the deficit under 20. Kane drove into the key and was fouled on her shot. She made both of her free-throws with under a minute left in the third quarter.

Cal Poly Pomona responded with a couple of smart baskets before Shane committed her fifth foul of the night on a reaching foul for the Broncos.

A fade-away jump shot from Grimsrud was no good and the Broncos drove down the other way. Putting more pressure on the CPP defense, Kane drew another foul on a shot in the key. Kane was sure on her first shot and the second one rolled in for a 56-42 lead.

Ten of the last 14 MSUB points in the game were from free-throws. With under 30 seconds to play, Lexi Prevost was sent to the line for two shots. She made both hers to push the lead to the biggest margin of the night at 20 points. CPP made one final 3-point basket to bring the margin back down and finish the game at 68-51.

For Cal Poly Pomona, Hagan finished with a game-high 19 points. Brooks had nine rebounds and three assists. The Broncos shot 36.2 percent for the game (17-47) and were 4-19 from long range.

MSU Billings was 17-41 for 41.7 percent and 12-23 for 52.2 percent from beyond the arc. MSUB had 13 turnovers to 19 from CPP. The Yellowjacket bench contributed 19 points. After an opening CPP lead of two points in the opening 11 seconds, MSUB regained the lead and didn't surrender it for the remaining minutes.

NOTE:MSUB lost to Cal Poly Pomona 75-68 two years ago in the NCAA Sweet Sixteen in Pomona. The Yellowjackets are now 2-7 all-time against CPP.

THE BUZZ: Tonight's victory marks Coach Woodin's 190^th career-win at MSUB which places him just one back from the all-time leader in women's basketball Frank McCarthy...now in his 12^th season with the Yellowjackets, Coach Woodin made his collegiate coaching debut on his birthday Nov. 20, 2004, with an 88-78 overtime win over Western Washington making this the second birthday win of Coach Woodin's career.

UP NEXT: MSU Billings continues its road-trip to California with a game Saturday, Nov. 21. The Yellowjackets travel west to face Cal State San Bernardino in another NCAA west region tilt.
