MSUB wraps up series in Hawai'i with win over Silverswords

HONOLULU - MSU Billings wrapped up its three game series in Hawai'i with an 89-64 win over Chaminade on Friday. The Yellowjackets finished 2-1 in the Aloha State over Thanksgiving, and next week will mark the start of conference play with a game at home against Alaska Anchorage.

MSU Billings (5-2) finished its time in Hawai'i with a dominating performance over Chaminade University. The Yellowjackets had 10 players score points in the game while everyone on the bench got a turn on the floor at McKinley High School.

Kayleen Goggins completed a double-double and was the game's high-scorer, setting a new career record with 25 points for MSUB. She was 9-15 from the floor while pulling in 10 rebounds in the win. Sophomore Alisha Breen had 21 points, and a game-high 11 rebounds against the Silverswords.

MSU Billings was 32-68 from the field for 47.1 percent shooting on the night. The team was also 10-24 in 3-point baskets for 41.7 percent and 15-20 from the free-throw line.

Breen led the Yellowjackets from beyond the arc, setting a new career-high and finishing with four 3-point buckets. Redshirt freshman Courtney Henry was 2-2 from 3-point range, and 2-2 from the charity stripe for a new career-high eight points in the game. Altogether, seven MSU Billings players met or exceeded individual career-highs against CUH.

"It was a great team effort tonight," head coach Kevin Woodin said. "While we allowed Chaminade to catch-up to us at the end of the first half, I thought our team's second half was one of the better halves we have played all year. We played much better defense and we shared the ball offensively very well. We also did a good job of getting the ball inside."

At the half, MSU Billings had built up a 41-32 lead.

Chaminade came back onto the court after the break making a run at the Yellowjackets, pulling the score to within five, 43-38 off a lay-up from Kennedi Akana. The two teams battled back-and-forth over the next four possessions, but MSUB regained control with a double-digit lead after a jumper from Marissa Van Atta gave MSUB a 53-43 lead with 14:26 left to play in the game.

Down the stretch, MSU Billings continued to knock down its shots. Quinn Peoples hit a 3-point basket with 9:44 left in the game, giving the Yellowjackets a 21-point lead, 66-45.

Although both teams scored 10 points in the last five minutes, MSUB had built up a considerable lead, by as many as 30 points in the final minutes, finishing the game on a 25-point margin at the end of regulation.

"I thought our point guard play from Courtney Henry and Rylee Kane was consistent and that helped a lot in transition," Coach Woodin said. "We got some excellent play from our bench in this game. We played a lot of people in the first half because of the heat and humidity and then everyone on the team played in the second half. I like the fact that we had 22 assists in the game and we did a good job on the boards."

Katie Buskey (13), Kristle Henry (12) and Akana (10) were the high-scorers for the Silverswords. Buskey had an individual team-high six rebounds, while Glacen Florita led the way in assists with three. Chaminade University (0-4) finished the game 20-50 from the field for 33.9 percent, 6-23 for 26.1 percent from 3-point territory and 18-28 for 64.3 percent from the foul line.

The largest discrepancy between the two teams was off the glass. MSU Billings had 61 rebounds, including 25 offensive boards on the night, to Chaminade's 29 total rebounds.

MSUB committed 14 turnovers, while CUH had 21. MSUB was stronger in the paint, 34-22, and produced more second-chance points, 18-13.

"Overall it has been a great trip," Coach Woodin commented. "We look forward to coming home and opening GNAC play against a tremendous opponent in Alaska Anchorage on Thursday. We play all but one game at home in the month of December, so we look forward to some great games on our home court."

NEXT UP: MSU Billings begins conference play next week. The Yellowjackets open up Great Northwest Athletic Conference competition hosting Alaska Anchorage on Thursday, Dec. 4, followed by a contest against Alaska Fairbanks on Saturday, Dec. 6. Both games are scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip-off inside Alterowitz Gymnasium. Live stats and live video for both games will be available on msubsports.com.
