MSUB volleyball downed in straight sets by Simon Fraser

Box Score BURNABY, B.C. – Although MSUB had some great rallies in the match to keep the team in the thick of it, the Yellowjackets fell in straight sets to the Clan by scores of 26-24, 25-17, and 25-12.
 
Outside hitters Monica Grimsrud and Ashlynn Ward both had six kills for MSU Billings. Alaina Gentili contributed five and Stormy Siemion put down four. MSUB was held to an overall hitting percentage of .071 and a team total of two blocks as Simon Fraser University swept the Yellowjackets in straight sets.
 
The Yellowjackets have now dropped six of their last seven matches and are 10-11 overall and 5-8 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. Simon Fraser University improves to 14-6 and 8-4 in the GNAC.
 
After an opening run by SFU of 6-2 in the opening set, MSUB Billings fought back and took the lead 8-6. The Yellowjackets went on to open up a larger lead as three kills by Ward led a charge in the middle of the set to a score of 14-11.
 
The Clan countered with their own rally. Madeline Hait and Kelsey Robinson helped mount a comeback that gave SFU the advantage at 19-17.
 
Two great service aces by setter Kyndal Williams pulled MSUB to within one point and SFU called a timeout to regroup. A huge kill by MSUB's Norris crosscourt tied the set up at 24, but two straight points by SFU ended the first set and gave the Clan a one set lead.
 
Set two was tight early, but Simon Fraser opened up small lead at 15-12. The Clan followed that up with a run of 5-2 to break open the second frame 20-14. A service error by SFU gave the side out to the Yellowjackets, but MSUB was unable to capitalize, and fell in the second set 25-17.
 
Two kills by Ward and one by Siemion opened up set three and the two teams were tied early at 5-5. SFU went on to dominate the last frame, making runs of 12-5 and 8-2 to close out the third set.
 
Hait finished the match leading all players with 14 kills and Amanda Renkema contributed 10, while putting up three blocks at the net. Alison McKay had a match-high of 19 digs while Kelsey Robinson scooped up 13.
 
Simon Fraser ended the match with 40 kills on a .300 hitting percentage.
 
Williams finished the match with her seventh double-double of the season leading the Yellowjackets with 22 assists and 11 digs. Haley Wells added eight digs for MSUB.
 
NEXT UP: It's a quick turn-around for Montana State University Billings. The Yellowjackets are hosting Rocky Mountain College this Tuesday, Oct. 28 at 7 pm. It is also Think Pink night at Alterowitz Gymnasium. Fans are encouraged to wear pink in support of breast cancer awareness.
