Late goal propels MSUB women to 2-1 win over Central Washington

Box Score ELLENSBURG, Wash. – With time winding down at the CWU soccer field, Alisa Sagdahl found the net in the 86th minute to push the Montana State University Billings women's soccer team to a 2-1 Great Northwest Athletic Conference win over Central Washington on Saturday afternoon.

Dana Lubieniecki fed a pass through to Sagdahl, who finished a one-on-one opportunity to break a 1-1 tie and prevent the game from moving to an overtime period.

Katlyn Lokay scored the first goal of the day for MSUB, putting her team ahead on a header goal in the 31st minute off of a corner kick feed from Sagdahl. "I am very proud of our team today," said MSUB head coach Wojtek Krakowiak. "The girls really dug deep and found a way to win at the end."

Hadli Farrand scored the only goal for the Wildcats, evening the score shortly after halftime on a long shot that found the net from 40 yards out.

MSUB outshot CWU 12-10 on the match, placing four shots on target while allowing just two. The Yellowjackets improved to 6-2-2 on the season with the win, and maintained their spot towards the top of the GNAC standings with a conference record of 4-2-2.

The Wildcats fell to 5-6-1 with the defeat, and are now 4-3-1 in GNAC action.

Lubieniecki had the first shot of the game, missing wide of the goal with a strike in the 12th minute. The teams kept each other quiet through the beginning of the match, and there was a lull in the action until a Lubieniecki corner kick in the 25th minute. The sophomore took another shot two minutes later, this time pushing the ball high above the crossbar.

Sagdahl took her first shot of the game in the 31st minute, setting up the Yellowjackets' first goal as her strike was blocked out of bounds for a corner kick. Sagdahl served in a cross, and Lokay directed it into the net with her head to make the score 1-0 in favor of MSUB.

The Wildcats responded with their first serious threat of the match, as Lauren Duty had a shot blocked and Viktoriya Vasina placed an attempt on frame within the next five minutes. MSUB goalkeeper Krystal Daniels collected her first save of the day on Vasina's shot, preserving the 1-0 advantage for the 'Jackets.

The Farrand sisters nearly combined for a goal just before halftime, but a header shot by Hadli Farrand missed wide off of a corner kick by Keilin Farrand.

Emerging from the halftime break, CWU found an equalizing goal within the first six minutes as Hadli Farrand placed a long shot into the upper left corner of the net to make the score 1-1.

The 'Jackets refused to let up offensively, as Lokay placed a shot on frame two minutes later that required a save by Kayla Lipston.

Jennifer Johnson took a shot for MSUB in the 58th minute, missing the target as the game remained knotted at 1-1.

CWU continued searching for a second goal, as Whitney Lowe had a shot blocked in the 71st minute and Keilin Farrand missed wide left less than one minute later.

Sagdahl had two more shots for MSUB as time wound down, missing wide both times in the 73rd minute. Teegan Koster forced Lipston to make another save, and Jessica Spang had a look towards goal that missed to the left with 10 minutes remaining in regulation.

As overtime grew more and more likely, the 'Jackets came up with the equalizing goal with less than four minutes left as Sagdahl lifted her team to a big victory.

"This is a good road GNAC win against a very solid Central Washington team," Krakowiak said. "We are looking forward to our next GNAC match."

THE BUZZ: MSUB has allowed just two goals over its last four matches…Haley McFarlane, Kari Kastelic, Johnson and Jessie Mancilla have each played every minute of the 2014 season on defense for the 'Jackets…through Saturday's game, the Yellowjackets have allowed almost 30 fewer shots than the next closest GNAC team, surrendering just 74 through 10 games this season.

NEXT WEEK: The Yellowjackets continue their road trip, visiting nationally-ranked Western Washington and Simon Fraser in two more GNAC contests. The 'Jackets and Vikings will square off on Oct. 16 with a 5 p.m. Mountain time kickoff at Harrington Field, and the date with the Clan is scheduled for a 6 p.m. Mountain time kickoff at Terry Fox Field in Burnaby, B.C.
