Wolves Bite Jackets in Double Overtime

Box Score Monmouth, Ore. –The Montana State University Billings Men's Basketball lost a tough, hard fought game to Western Oregon University Saturday afternoon, 98-90 in double overtime.

MSUB had the lead at in the last ten seconds of both regulation and the first overtime period. In the waning seconds of regulation, Kalob Hatcher drove down the lane and then kicked it out to Chase Miller who hit a deep three point shot to give MSUB a 75-72 led with 11 seconds left.

After a series of timeouts by both teams, WOU in-bounded the ball to Devon Alexander who was fouled by Hatcher with six seconds left to force WOU to the free throw line and not allow them to get off a three point shot. Alexander would hit both free throws to cut the Jacket lead to two, 75-74.

The Wolves fouled Jonathan Meshgna with four seconds left, he would go onto hit one of two free throws to give MSUB a two point led, 76-74.

WOU's Rodney Webster dribbled the ball across half court when Devon Wallace fouled him to send him to the line. He would make both to tie the game at 76 with three seconds left. Mesghna threw up a desperation three from half court that ended up short of the basket and the game would travel into the first OT period.

In the first OT period, MSUB had a three point lead, 86-83, with 15 seconds left after Miller made two free throws. WOU would get the ball back to Webster who launched a long three point shot that found the bottom up the net to tie the game 86-86 with eight seconds left. The Jackets would not get a shot off as time expired to send the battle into a second overtime.

The Wolves were able to manage their first two possession lead of either OT periods after Adam Hastings hit a jumper from the left wing to give WOU a 90-86 advantage. MSUB would cut the lead to two after Hatcher hit a jumper with one minute and seventeen seconds left making it 92-90. Webster Again came up key for WOU as he hit a jumper with forty one seconds left to make it 94-90.

Mesghna would put up a three point attempt that missed wide left and fell into WOU arms and end up in the hands of Webster who iced the game from the free throw line. He made both free throws and extended the WOU led to 96-90 with. The Wolves would hit two more free throws and escape with the 98-90 win.

"We played extremely well this entire weekend, but this is a tough loss," head coach Jamie Stevens said. "Credit goes to WOU for making big plays down the stretch. Unfortunately we had the game won in regulations and at the end of the first overtime. We just did not execute situations and missed several key free throws. The buck stops with me, I need to do a better job of preparing our guys in late game situations."

Both teams ended the game with six players scoring double figures. The Jackets were led by a career night from Miller who scored a career high and team high 18 points going 4-8 from behind the arc. Hatcher scored 16 points and had a game high seven assists. Both Wallace and Connor Donaldson scored 15 points while both Mesghna and Austin Hudson added 10 points.

Webster had a game high 27 points for the Wolves to go with five rebounds. Marwan Sarhan would score 15 points and Jordan Wiley scored 14 points as well. Three other WOU players finished in double figures.

MSUB was out rebounded 51-37 as both big men for the Jackets, Hudson and Tyler Nelson fouled out of the game before either of the overtime periods. WOU outscored MSUB in points in the paint, 36-28.

The WOU bench out produced the Jacket bench 43-24 as Webster came off the bench for the Wolves.

The last overtime game MSUB played was during the 2008-209 season in which they defeated Alaska Fairbanks University 118-112.

MSUB falls to 6-6 overall and 2-2 in Great North West Athletic Conference while WOU goes to 10-4 overall and 3-1 GNAC.

The Jackets return to Alterowtiz Gym to take on Alaska-Anchorage University and Alaska-Fairbanks University. The game against AAU is on Thursday, Jan. 9th and the AFU game is on Saturday, Jan. 11th. Both games are scheduled to begin a 7:00 PM.
