SAN DIEGO – The Montana State University Billings' volleyball team struggled on the second day of the Seaside Invitational. The Yellowjackets were swept in a pair of three-set matches to Azusa Pacific and Cal State-Dominguez Hills.
The Yellowjackets (1-3) opened the day with APU. The Cougars finished with a .298 hitting percentage, while MSUB was held to .098. Azusa Pacific was led by Alicia Utke's match-high 14 kills. She finished with a double-double, adding 10 digs. Emily Ingalls and Ashley Swatek both had 11 digs. Tristan Racich dished out 24 assists.
The match featured 17 ties and seven lead changes; 14 of the ties and six of the lead changes came in the first two sets. MSU Billings trailed 17-15 in set one, but the Cougars scored eight of the final 10 points for the 25-17 win. The Yellowjackets trailed 21-16 in the second set, before making an 8-0 run. MSUB had set point at 24-21, but again it was Azusa Pacific that closed strong with a 5-0 run for the 26-24 win. APU (3-1) carried the momentum into the third set. The Cougars controlled the tempo of the final set, cruising to a 25-9 victory.
Monica Grimsrud had a team-high 10 kills for Montana State Billings.
Kyndal Williams had a match-high 25 assists.
Sydney Oberstein finished with a career-high 16 digs.
In Saturday's second match, Cal State-Dominguez Hills never surrendered a lead to MSU Billings. The match had only two ties, both in the second set. Whitney Lee had a match-high 14 kills for the Toros. Dana Brown's 37 assists and Elizabeth Kreiger's nine digs were also match highs. Lee's .611 hitting percentage led Dominguez Hills to a .354 team percentage.
Chelsey Walter and
Krista Norris had 11 and 10 kills for MSUB. Williams finished with 27 assists. Oberstein and
Kierney Findon both added six digs.
Walter was named to the All-Tournament team. Through the four matches at the tournament she had a team-high 45 kills and .432 hitting percentage. The junior also has a team-high nine total blocks. Walter is currently fifth in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference in hitting percentage. Williams is third in assists per set (9.69).
The Yellowjackets stay in California and travel north to Rohnert Park. MSU Billings competes in the Seawolf Spike on Sept. 13 and 14. It opens the tournament with Cal State-Chico Friday at 11:15 a.m. Pacific Time. Live coverage from each match of the tournament will be on MSUBSports.com.
