BILLINGS, Mont. – The Montana State University Billings' volleyball team picked up its first Great Northwest Athletic Conference victory with a sweep over Simon Fraser Saturday, 25-18, 25-15, and 25-22.
The Yellowjackets (3-9, 1-3 GNAC) followed a .355 attack percentage in the first set, with a .364 percentage in the second. They finished with a .237 attack percentage in the match. MSU Billings held the Clan to .071. MSUB also had a 36-28 advantage in kills. The Yellowjackets also had nine total blocks, while SFU had five.
"Tonight was a huge win for us," MSUB Head Coach
Lisa Axel said. "To be home after such a long road trip to begin the season, it was great for us to play in front of our own fans. We've been playing some good competition and just not getting the wins, so to pull out a victory was great."
The match featured 14 ties and five lead changes. Montana State Billings improved to 3-0 this season when winning the first set, and 0-9 when falling in the opening set. MSUB has now six straight against the Clan. The Yellowjackets have won all 15 sets over SFU in Billings all-time.
Monica Grimsrud finished with a double-double for the Yellowjackets. The junior had a match-high 10 kills and 12 digs. She also was in on six blocks, three were solo.
Chelsey Walter hit .389 and had nine kills.
Kyndal Williams finished with a match-high 25 assists.
Julianna Evola had three of MSUB's eight service aces. The Yellowjackets committed eight service errors.
After winning five straight, the Clan (5-3, 0-2) dropped their two conference openers. SFU was led by Kelsey Robinson's 10 kills. Brooklyn Gould-Bradbury had a team-high 14 assists, while Alanna Chan had eight digs.
The Yellowjackets return to the road for three straight conference matches, beginning next Saturday, Oct. 5, at Seattle Pacific. The Falcons (6-6, 2-2) fell in three sets at home to No. 11 Western Washington Saturday. The last MSU Billings' victory at SPU was in 2009. Match time is scheduled for 1 p.m. Pacific Time. "Tonight was a big confidence booster for us," Axel said. "We need to realize we're a good team. Now we will face our travel partner in SPU, and it's good to be going there after a win like this."
