Greenback, Koster and Shuman Interview

Billings, Mont. – Montana State Billings started fast and finished strong in their home opener Monday (Sept. 16) afternoon against the University of Mary. The Yellowjackets used a strong offensive attack to defeat the Marauders 2-0, winning their first match of the 2013 season.

MSUB's attack proved to be too much, outshooting the opposition 20-6, landing 12 shots on goal. The Jackets defense also had a solid outing, only allowing two shots to hit on target.

"Today was a great team win; we created a lot of chances and were able to score a couple goals," stated head coach Wojtek Krakowiak. "Mary is a very strong team who always gives us a tough game. Our defense did a good job of winning the ball in the back and distributing it forward. It's great to get the first win at home."

After six quality shots in the first half, the constant strain MSU Billings' offense put on the Marauders' defense finally broke through and resulted in a hand ball in the 32nd minute. Receiving a penalty shot, Heidi Greenback completed the opportunity and easily struck the shot past Bailey Wenz to give the Jackets the early 1-0 lead. The goal marks the team's first score of the 2013 season and Greenback's 23rd career goal.

MSUB had two more shots on goal after the successful penalty kick but weren't able to extend their lead and went into the intermission with the one goal advantage.

The Yellowjackets carried their aggressive attack into the second half taking 10 shots between the 47th and 82nd minute. As MSU Billings comfortably controlled possession, they sealed the victory with another goal at 81:14. Chelsea Shuman led Teegan Koster with a beautiful touch pass and the sophomore midfielder finished the play, nailing the shot from 10 yards out. The score marks Koster's first career goal.

In the midst of facing continuous pressure, Wenz was a formidable keeper for the Marauders, finishing with 10 saves on the day. Kaylee Kimmet got the start for MSU Billings and notched two saves in the match.

The Yellowjackets (1-0-1) will not spend much time celebrating as they start their Great Northwest Athletic Conference schedule Thursday, Sept. 19. against Simon Fraser University. This contest will be the first game in the Thursday double-header with the Jackets' men's team.
