Baseball: Bishop Signs 10 to Start 2014 Recruiting Class


Billings, Mont. – Montana State Billings baseball team third year head coach, Rob Bishop starts the 2014 recruiting class with 10 signees. The Yellowjackets will welcome six high school standouts and four junior college talents to the 2014 roster.
 
“We are extremely excited about this recruiting class; we feel that we have addressed all of our needs on the field, and this class will help us achieve the goal of continuing our upward trajectory with the MSUB baseball program,” stated Bishop. “This group is very balanced, and each student-athlete has been successful on the field and in the classroom and we are looking forward to being a part of their continued development on and off the field.”
 
 
DJ Baxter (Billings, MT/ Skyview HS)
American Legion Team: Billings Royals
6-2 – 190 – Pitcher
 
Baxter brings a quality arm to the Yellowjackets pitching staff. While playing for the Billings Royals, he helped his team to a 2012 State Championship. During his 2012 campaign he posted a 3-5 record, 4.03 earned run average, and 33 strikeouts in 57.33 innings on the mound.
 
Coach Bishop on Baxter: “DJ had a solid summer with the Billings Royals last year and we believe he will develop into a very good college pitcher with the help of our strength program at MSUB. Watch for him to make big strides in the next few years.”
 
 
Cameron Callen (Renton, WA/ Charles A. Lindbergh Senior HS)
5-7 – 155 – Infielder
 
Callen is a versatile athlete that lettered in three sports at Charles A. Lindbergh Senior. He played baseball and football for four years, and basketball for two years. Callen helped the baseball team to a league championship in 2012 and a district championship in 2011. During his 2011 campaign he recorded a .625 batting average, four home runs, 26 RBIs and 22 stolen bases. In his interscholastic career he currently has a .495 batting average, four home runs, 39 RBIs and 30 stolen bases.
 
Callen won first team Seamount All-League honors in 2011 and was a Most Valuable Player runner up. In 2010 he received Seamount All-League honorable mention.
 
On the football field, he helped the team capture a Seamount 2A League Championship in 2010. Callen earned Seamount League Player of the Year, Offensive Back of the Year, and First Team All-League in 2012. He also earned first team Seamount All-League honors in 2011, and honorable mention honors in 2010.
 
Coach Bishop on Callen: “Cameron is a terrific athlete; he was a standout wide receiver on the football field and has been successful on the basketball court as well. As a baseball player he will definitely bring speed to the base paths and a solid defender at any of the infield spots. Callen will be an exciting player to watch this year and into the future.”
 
 
Jacob Campeau (Walla Walla, WA/ Walla Walla HS/ Walla Walla CC)
6-5 – 215 – Pitcher
 
Campeau's experience on the mound will look to have an immediate impact on the Jackets next season. In 2013 at Walla Walla Community College, he currently has a 6-4 overall record in 17 appearances and 11 starts, 4.44 ERA, one shutout, four saves, and 71 strikeouts in 79 innings on the mound. Campeau also pitched two complete games. During his 2012 campaign, he appeared in 10 contests, recorded a 2-4 record, 4.06 ERA, and 18 strikeouts in 51 innings of work.
 
Prior to Walla Walla, Campeau was a three sport athlete at Walla Walla high school; lettering in baseball for two years, football for three and basketball for one. During his senior season he pitched 39 innings, registering 45 strikeouts and a 4.67 ERA en route to helping the Blue Devils win a 2011 Big Nine 4A League Championship and 2011 Regional Championship. He earned first team All-Big Nine plaudits at pitcher and first base, and second team All-State honors at pitcher in 2011. In 2010 he received the team's Pitcher of the Year award and Big Nine honorable mention honors.
 
Coach Bishop on Campeau: “Jake has tremendous upside on the mound and had a terrific spring in a very tough league. He has a very good arm and solid secondary stuff as well. We are looking forward to watching him continue to develop as a Yellowjacket.”
 
 
Drew Christina (Walla Walla, WA/ Walla Walla HS/ Walla Walla CC)
6-2 – 180 – Pitcher
 
Christina also comes to the Yellowjackets from Walla Walla Community College, and has put up outstanding numbers for the Warriors. This lefty currently has a 7-2 record in 12 starts and 13 appearances. He has a 2.25 ERA while pitching 79.2 innings, recording 72 strikeouts and only allowing 54 hits. In 2012 he notched a 10-2 record, 2.39 ERA and 75 strikeouts while earning second team All-NWAACC honors.
 
Before his tenure at Walla Walla Community College, Christina lettered in football and baseball for three years at Walla Walla High School. During his senior season in 2011 he helped the Blue Devils baseball team win the Big Nine 4A League Championship and Regional Championship. Christina boasted a 9-0 record, pitching 49 innings, and recording 70 strikeouts and a 1.71 ERA. He also won the Big Nine 4A Pitcher of the Year award in 2011 and received Big Nine Academic All-Conference honors. Christina was an Honor Scholar Athlete in both football and baseball from 2007-2011, maintaining a minimum grade point average of 3.5.
 
Coach Bishop on Christina: “Drew has had a great career at Walla Walla CC and we believe he will be a terrific addition to our pitching staff. He has very good stuff and is a guy that has proven to be successful against high level hitters. Drew is a great addition to our program.”
 
 
Cody Cooper (Bozeman, MT/ Bozeman HS)
American Legion Team: Bozeman Bucks
6-4 – 205 – Pitcher/ Infielder
 
Cooper has been battle tested in the American Legion League as he enters his fourth year with the Bozeman Bucks. In 2012 he made 25 appearances and recorded a 7-7 overall record. He pitched 77.1 innings, tallied 59 strikeouts, a 4.32 ERA and three saves.
 
Coach Bishop on Cooper: "Cody is a great example of the type of guy we hope to attract into our program. He has great character, great academics and a ton of potential. We are excited to watch him develop in our program."
 
 
Adam Cox (Encino, CA/ William Howard Taft HS)
6-3 – 165 – Infielder/ Pitcher
 
Cox will bring versatility to the Yellowjackets program, as he is one pace to receive his fourth letter in baseball from Taft Senior High School. In 2012 he recorded a .540 batting average and went undefeated on the mound with a 4-0 record.
 
Coach Bishop on Cox: “Adam is a terrific overall baseball player. He is the No. 1 starter on his high school baseball team in addition to playing shortstop and hitting in the middle of the order. Adam has a lot of club baseball experience as well and has faced high level competition throughout his prep career.  He has only scratched the surface physically and we are confident that he can develop into a dominant player at MSUB.”
 
 
Trevor Johnson (Great Falls, MT/ Great Falls HS/ Miles CC)
American Legion Team: Great Falls Chargers
5-11 – 190 – Pitcher
 
Johnson looks to add to the list of quality players that have come from the Miles Community College baseball program. In this current season at Miles City, he has appeared in 11 contests and compiled a 7-2 record while only allowing 53 hits in 50 innings pitched. Johnson has recorded a 3.96 ERA with 48 strikeouts and one save. In 2012 as a freshman, he started 12 games while making 13 total appearances. Johnson pitched 75.2 innings, registered an 8-3 record with five complete games and three shutouts. He also posted a 2.50 ERA and 52 strikeouts while earning all-conference and all-region IX honors.
 
Prior to Miles, Johnson had a remarkable Legion career with the Great Falls Chargers. He earned all-conference honors in 2011, Most Valuable Player honors in 2010, and Pitcher of the Year plaudits in 2008. Johnson also helped his team to a second place finish in the state and conference in 2010.
 
Coach Bishop on Johnson: “Trevor is another Miles product that we feel can step in and make an impact on our pitching staff. He had a great Legion career in Great Falls and has progressed nicely under Coach Jeff Brabant.”
 
 
Jordan Knoll (Salem, OR/ South Salem HS)
American Legion Team: Withnell Dodgers
5-11 – 180 – Pitcher
 
Knoll's craftiness will bring a quality arm to MSUB's pitching rotation. He is a dual sport athlete lettering in baseball and football for three years. In 2012 while helping South Salem capture a CVC League Championship, Knoll recorded an 8-3 record and 88 strikeouts. He also went 8-1 for the Withnell Dodgers and recorded a combined 3.08 ERA in 2012. For his efforts, Knoll was a first team all-league selection and honorable mention all-state selection. In 2011 he was a key contributor on the Dodgers 2011 American Legion AAA State Championship team. Knoll earned second team all-league honors in 2011.
 
Coach Bishop on Knoll: “Jordan brings a quality arm from the left side and a ton of high school and Legion baseball experience. He is a terrific competitor and we look for him to compete immediately on our pitching staff. Jordan pitched at Dehler Park in the Legion regional at the age of 16, and since that tournament has been excited to get back to Billings.”
 
 
Jacob Mills (Burley, ID/ Burley HS/ Miles CC)
American Legion Team: Burley Green Sox
6-2 – 205 – Pitcher/ Infielder
 
Mills also comes to the Yellowjackets program from Miles Community College, and brings a great depth of collegiate and Legion experience with him. In 2013 he has made nine appearances and posted a 6-0 record with 48 strikeouts. Mills has registered a 3.03 ERA, while only allowing 53 hits in 59.3 innings. During his freshman campaign in 2012, he went 6-3 with a 4.4 ERA in 58.2 innings on the mound. Mills also recorded six complete games and three shutouts.
 
Prior to Miles, Mills played Legion baseball while also lettering in football for three years and basketball for two at Burley High School. In 2012 he helped lead the Burley Green Sox to a State Championship and second place in the Northwest Region. Mills earned all-state and all-conference honors in 2010 and 2011. In 2011 he recorded a .492 batting average with 22 RBIs, four home runs, a 2.92 ERA and an 8-1 record on the mound.
 
He also earned all-conference honors in football in 2010 and 2011.
 
Coach Bishop on Mills: “Jake has had a terrific career on the mound at Miles and we will look for him to continue that as a Yellowjacket. He brings a ton of moxie to the mound as well as a terrific repertoire of pitches. Mills comes from a great baseball background and his baseball IQ is fantastic. All of these attributes make him a terrific addition to our program.”
 
 
Johnny Wilkerson (Eagle Point, OR/ Eagle Point HS)
5-11 – 190 – Infielder/ Catcher
 
Wilkerson is a tough dynamic athlete, who lettered in three sports at Eagle Point High School. He earned four letters in football and wrestling, and three in baseball. In 2012 as a junior he recorded a .404 batting average, six home runs and the team's Most Valuable Player and Best Hitter awards. Wilkerson helped Eagle Point to second place finishes in the division in 2011 and 2012. He received all-conference honors 2010, 2011 and 2012.
 
On the wrestling mat, Wilkerson placed third at the state tournament in 2012 at 182 lbs. and fourth in 2011 at 160 lbs.
 
Coach Bishop on Wilkerson: “Johnny was a standout on the football field and on the wrestling mat in high school. He is a very good athlete with raw strength and the ability to play virtually any position on the field. Once he turns his focus solely on baseball he has a chance to be a special college player.”
