Billings, Mont. – Montana State Billings women's basketball team four game win streak was ended as the University of Alaska Anchorage defeated the Yellowjackets 61-55. MSUB led for the majority of the contest but were unable to hold on down the stretch, and fall to 15-6 overall, 9-4 in the GNAC.

In a contest that had six different lead changes and seven ties, the Seawolves (12-9, 6-7 GNAC) used 34 second half points compared to the Jackets 22 to capture their 12th victory of the year. Neither team shot particularly well from the field, but MSUB's 5.9 percent from behind the arch would prove to be one of the deciding factors. The Yelllowjackets were also out rebounded 48-34 by Anchorage.

“Tough loss tonight, I thought we had a great opportunity to get a road win,” stated head coach Kevin Woodin. “I give Anchorage a lot of credit; they did a better job in the second half. I felt rebounding was the big difference, we gave them too many second chance opportunities.”

Despite losing, MSUB saw an inspiring performance by Janiel Olson who recorded her fourth double-double of the season, with 14 points and 13 rebounds.

Kayleen Goggins and Bobbi Knudsen also played well. Goggins tallied 10 points; and Knudsen finished with 14 points, seven rebounds, five assists, two blocks and two steals.

Anchorage's starting five played great, with all but one player scoring in double figures. Jenna Buchanan led all scorers with 17 points and Alysa Horn registered a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds. Kylie Burns also posted a double-double, finishing with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

With the score tied at 17 all at the 10:16 mark in the first half, the Jackets went on a 14-4 run to own a 10 point advantage (31-21) with 5:10 remaining. The Seawolves countered with a 6-2 run to close the half and cut MSUB's lead down to six (33-27) entering the break.

The Yellowjackets and Anchorage battled back and forth in the early moments of the second half and the Seawolves would eventually capture the lead at 11:47 (40-38). MSUB and Anchorage continued to compete and trade leads until the later parts of regulation.

With the score tied at 53 all and 3:36 left, the Seawolves recaptured the lead on two free throws by Horn at the 1:01 mark. MSUB could not hit a shot down the stretch, forcing them to foul the opposition for an attempt at last second heroics. Anchorage went 6-6 from the free throw line in the final 30 seconds to close the match.

“Our players played hard, but offensively we missed a lot of shots that we normally make,” Woodin said. “We will need to improve upon that in the future.”

The Jackets' games do not get any easier from this point on as they welcome nationally ranked opponents Simon Fraser and Western Washington into Alterowitz Gymnasium next weekend.

“It will be nice to get back home next week against the two top teams in the conference,” stated Woodin. “We will have to play very well to compete against them and we are looking forward to that opportunity.”

The Vikings entered this weekend nationally ranked No. 4 while Simon Fraser held the No. 12 ranking.
