Box Score LAS VEGAS, Nev. –The Montana State University Billings Men's Basketball team took down the Academy of Art University Wednesday evening during the Dixie State Challenge in Las Vegas Nev., 85-69.
The Jackets (5-4, 1-1 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) relied on a great overall team effort to secure the victory. Five total players scored double figures for MSUB. They were led by the team's leading scorer on the season,
Jonathan Mesghna, who finished with 18 points and seven rebounds.
Connor Donaldson had 16 points to go with seven rebounds.
Chase Miller had the best game of his career as a Yellowjackets, scoring 13 points and went 3-4 from three point range.
Austin Hudson finished with 12 points in 11 minutes of play as he got into some foul trouble early;
Marc Matthews recorded 10 points and gathered in five rebounds as well for MSUB.
Kalob Hatcher, who is currently 10th in the Nation for assists per game averaging 6.6 per game, finished with nine points and a game high six assists.
The Urban Knights (2-7, 1-2 Pacific Athletic Conference West) were paced by Alexis Moore who scored a game high 20 points. Rodrigo Maza scored 14 and Aaron Anderson had 12 for Academy of Art. MSUB did a good job of limiting the Urban Knight's leading scorer, and reigning PAC West freshmen of the year, Alex Carmon who finished the game with nine points on 3-11 shooting.
The Yellowjackets shot 50.0 percent from the field, 40.7 percent from three point range (11-27) and 83.3 percent from the free throw line (20-24). The Urban Knights were held to 37.9 percent from the field overall, 36.4 (4-11) from three point land and 61.8 (21-34) from the free throw line.
"I was pleased with the way our guys played today, especially in the second half," head coach
Jamie Stevens said. "We played really hard and got hot in the second half. We need to do a better job of not fouling and our rebounding has to improve. But overall we got a little bit better today."
The Jackets went into the half down by one, 36-34 but would rally in the second. With sixteen minutes and seven seconds left, MSUB was ahead by two 42-40. The Jackets would the go on a 10-0 run after a three pointer from Hatcher to make it 50-40 with fourteen minutes and fourteen seconds left in the game.
The Jackets would keep the Urban Knights at bay with a ten point cushion for almost the rest of the game and would finally pull away by a deceive margin, 81-63 after a layup by Matthews with two minutes left.
MSUB's bench out produced the Urban knights 27-12; and held a 26-24 points in the paint advantage. The Urban Knights had more second chance points, 14-6, after gathering in double the offensive rebounds of MSUB, 14-7.
The Jackets next play host school Dixie State University on Friday Dec. 19. The game is scheduled to being at 6:30 P.M PT (7:30 P.M. MST). Stats can be found at
