BILLINGS, Mont. –The Montana State University Billings Men's Basketball lost a hard fought game to the University of Montana Western Friday night, 78-67 during the Yellowstone Bank & Billings Hotel Classic played at Alterowitz Gym.

Going into the half the Bull dogs led 36-34 led by Maazin Butler's 11 points and Jordan Overstreet's 10 points. The Bulldogs shot 45.2% from the file as well as connecting 3-11 from behind the arc for a 27.3%.

The Yellowjackets had eight players score in the first half, led by Devon Wallace's nine points on 2-4 from three point range. The Yellowjackets did a great job of pressuring the ball in the first half, forcing nine turnovers while only giving up three.

MSUB would open the second half with a quick three from Jonathan Mesghna after an assist from Kalob Hatcher to take the lead 37-36. The the Bulldogs went on a 13-5 run to take a lead of 40-49. Eight minutes into the second half, MSUB's Marc Matthews would hit a three to bring the Jackets within one, 52-53. That would be the closest MSUB would get to UMW as they went onto methodically pull away, first two points, then four then 11 by the time there was four minutes left. The Bulldog lead was never more than 13 and in the end they would close out the victory on six Overstreet free throws, 78-67.

"Western is really good," Head Coach Jamie Stevens said. "They are rolling seniors and juniors out there, right now they are better than us. I think at the end of the year we will have a chance to be pretty good. I thought our guys played hard, I liked what we did in the first half, but just didn't make a lot of threes and that's one of our strengths. We took a lot of good shots but they just didn't fall. Western made a lot of game winning plays, we missed free throws and they would come down and make a shot."

Overstreet had a game high 22 points with three other bulldogs hitting double figures including Jake Owsley who recoreded a double-double of 17 points and a game high 11 rebounds. Kalob Hatcher had a team high 17 points and four assists for MSUB. Mesghan led MSUB with nine rebounds.

The Jackets scored 27 points off turnovers but the Bulldogs had more points in the paint, 30-14. MSUB had more second chance points, 15-11 and had better bench production, 26-10. Overall MSUB shot 30.3% on to go with 25.6% from beyond the arc and 64.0% from the charity line. The Bulldogs shot 52.8% from the field, 29.4% from three point range and 64.5% from the free throw line.

Earlier in the evening, Colorado school of Mines defeated Carroll College 98-56. Mines had six players score in double figures and where lead by Trevor Wages who had 13 points and 10 rebounds and Trevor Ritchie's team high 16 points. Carroll was led by Dennis Mikelonis who had a game high 18 points.

The Yellowstone Bank & Billings Hotel Basketball Classic continues tomorrow with Mines playing Western Mont. at 2:00 P.M. followed by the final game, Carroll against MSUB at 4:00 P.M. Stats and live video for both games can be found at MSUBSPORTS.COM.
