Volleyball Has Record Night at the Net: Wins Last Game of the Season

Box Score

BILLINGS, Mont. – The Montana State University Billings Volleyball team finished up their 2013 season with a win on Senior Night Saturday Nov. 23 against the University of Alaska Fairbanks 17-25, 25-18, 25-17, and 25-15.

It was a story at the net for MSU Billings (7-20, 4-14 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) on their last home game of this season.  As a team the Yellowjackets had a .121 attack percent, but held Alaska Fairbanks (4-25, 3-15 GNAC) to a .015 attack percent overall.

The Yellowjackets had a record-setting night at the net with 21 team blocks, 10 more than their previous season high in their upset win against Central Washington University back on Nov. 7.  Chelsey Walter led MSUB at the net as she broke her own season record (2-6, 8) with six solo blocks and six more block assists (6,6 12).  Monica Grimsrud had a total of five blocks and tied her season record of three block solos, and Julia Anderson set a new career record of two block solos and two block assists.

It was Alaska Fairbanks who had the momentum in the first set.  They took the score to 13-5 before the Yellowjackets put together a five point run to make it 9-13.  It would be UAF from there as they wouldn't let MSUB back into the set, finally securing the early lead 25-17.

The next three sets would have the MSUB playing tight defense.  Along with the team performance at the net, the Yellowjacket back row kept the ball alive as all 11 players on the 'Jackets team would record a dig in the match.  Sydney Oberstein had a team high 15.  Krista Norris would also record a number in the double-digits; she came up with twelve.  Kierney Findon had eight digs as well as two service aces.

Alaska Fairbanks was led by the GNAC leader in kills per set (4.73) Sam Harthun, who had a team-high 15 kills on a .125 attack percent.  Cassidy Brewer had seven kills and a team-high .150 attack percent.  The Nanooks had 12 team blocks; Lilah Hudson and Britt Glaeser both had three block assists.

Katelyn Camp had 30 of the 33 assists for Alaska Fairbanks.  The Nanooks had nine service aces on the night; Harthun and Tessa Butterfiled both recorded three.

Monica Grimsrud led MSUB with a team-high 12 kills.  Ashlynn Ward had 10 terminations off of a .250 attack percent.  Walter added nine.

Kyndal Williams led all players in the match with 35 assists for MSU Billings.  She also recorded two service aces.
