Volleyball: Wolves Bite Back

Box Score

MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Montana State University Billings Volleyball team lost in four sets to Western Oregon on Thursday 20-25, 28-30, 25-21, and 21-25.

There were just too many comebacks by Western Oregon (10-15, 7-8 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) for Montana State Billings to overcome as both teams fought hard in the four set match.

There was a whopping 29 tie scores and 10 lead changes as MSU Billings (5-19, 2-13 GNAC) struggled to maintain a team lead as WOU continued to push-back in each set.  The second set contained the most drama as MSUB lead the set at 14-9, 17-11, and finally 19-13, but on a kill by WOU's Krissi Kemper, the Wolves would go on an 11-4 run tying the game at 24 all.  It was back and forth until 28-28, when a kill by Western Oregon's Cherene O'Hara and then an attack error by MSUB'S Stormy Siemion would give WOU a two-set lead.

The Yellowjackets would dig deep in the third set, coming back out onto the floor and taking control, only giving up the lead twice after the first few points to send the match to a fourth set.  In the fourth, MSU Billings would have another opportunity with the lead at 14-13, but it was WOU who would go on another point-run, tallying up 8 straight points before a kill by Monica Grimsrud would give MSUB the serve and a chance to catch-up.  But, a kill by Becky Blees on the next point would have MSU Billings falling behind again, and unable to mount a come-back, would finally lose the set and the match at 21-25.

Hannah Deede was the big hitter for the Wolves, she had a team-high 11 kills on 26 attempts for a .269 attack percentage.  Christie Colasurdo had nine, and Krissi Kemper, Becky Blees, and Cherene O'Hara all chipped in seven.

Western Oregon's defense was spread out as four players were in the double-digits.  Jordin Ramos dug up 17, Colasurdo had 16, Megan Triggs had 11, and Madison Kuther contributed 10 digs.

The Wolves offense was run by Ramos, who had 25 assists, and Erin Dodson who had 19.

Both teams had 54 kills in the match.  Montana State Billings' was again led by Monica Grimsrud.  She led all players with 22 kills on the night.  This is the third game in a row with 20 plus kills for Grimsrud, who has 314 on the season and now a career total of 1,034, just nine kills away from moving into 6th place all-time at MSUB.  Chelsey Walter also had some nice decision-making at the net; she came in with 14 kills on 28 attempts for an excellent .429 attack percent.

Sydney Oberstein had an individual season-high in digs for the Yellowjackets with 28.  This is second behind Stormy Siemion who had 36 against Central Washington last Thursday.  Oberstein's previous high was 21, also in last Thursday's match against Central Washington.  Oberstein is the team leader and now has 315 digs on the season.

Stormy Siemion was also in double-digits in digs, she had 14 as well as contributing seven kills for MSU Billings.  Kyndal Williams had 12 digs in the match, and led all players in assists with 45.  This takes Williams to 1,840 career assists, 10 away from moving into 4th place all-time at MSUB.

On Saturday November 16, Montana State Billings will travel to Saint Martin's for another conference match.  MSUB will face the Saints at 7 PM Pacific Time.  Live video and live stats can be found at MSUBSports.com
