Box Score
BILLINGS, Mont. – The Montana State University Billings Women's Soccer team lost in the final second of overtime 2-3 to Western Oregon University Thursday afternoon.
With gusting winds from the West, the game was played mostly on the east side of the field with winds stalling and sometimes blowing the ball backwards and creating issues for the defense.
The Jackets had to open the game defending the East side goal and with the pressure applied by the Wolves and the wind factor, the Wolves outshot the Jackets 7-1. The Wolves opened the scoring in the 32nd minute when JoEllen DeLeon scored an unassisted goal when she blasted a ball straight at Jacket Goalie
Kaylee Kimmet, which deflected off Kimmet and rolled across the goal line.
The Wolves went into the half with a 1-0 lead.
At the start of the second half it was time for WO to defend the East side goal. With the wind at their backs, the Jackets let loose a barrage of shot attempts out shooting the Wolves 6-2 in the second half. It didn't take long for the Jackets to get on the board, in the 48th minute
Heidi Greenback found the back of the net when she struck the ball and it too deflected off of WO goal keeper Amanda Rose Johnson after an assist from
Alisa Sagdahl to even the score at 1-1.
The Jackets would take the lead after
Chelsea Shuman scored on an assist from Sagdahl again from the top left of the box, past Rose Johnson into the lower right side of the goal to put MSUB ahead 2-1.
Then with time dwindling away the Wolves leading point scorer, Makana Pundyke scored a goal from seven yards out beating Kimmet with the finish in the lower right side to bring the score to 2-2 and the game would head into overtime.
Neither team could muster a shot attempt until the 99th minute with 19 seconds remaining in the first overtime period. The ball was played into the box and was bouncing off of players from both teams until Allison Sprecher knocked it across the goal line into the goal to give the Wolves the 3-2 win.
The Wolves improve to 9-3-5, 7-3-3 Great Northwest Athletic Conference while the Jackets drop to 5-8-2, 4-8-1 GNAC.
The Wolves outshot the Jackets 10-7 and held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The Jackets next play Northwest Nazarene University on Saturday, Nov. 2nd at 1:00 P.M. at Yellowjacket Field. The match is the final game of the year for MSUB who did not qualify for the conference tournament. It is also senior day for the Jacket Seniors,
Jackie Hill and
Heidi Greenback. They will be honored before the game. Stats and live video can be found at MSUBSPORTS.COM
