Volleyball Triumphant Over Rival Rocky
BILLINGS, Mont. – The Montana State University Billings' Volleyball team was triumphant over fellow Billings' school Rocky Mountain College Monday 26-24, 20-25, 28-26, and 25-23.
It was "Think Pink" Night at Alterowitz Gymnasium as Billings' rival schools MSU Billings and Rocky Mountain College went head-to-head in a non-conference match-up that showcased both school's skills and supported a good cause.
St. Vincent Healthcare and the EVA project helped pack the gym in pink as an enthusiastic crowd came to watch a rivalry that had its 52
nd meeting tonight. Both teams came to play as there were 33 ties and 14 lead changes in a match where both teams finished with players in double-digits in kills and digs.
The MSU Billings' Volleyball team was precise, and well-disciplined in their attack plan against rival school Rocky Mountain College. The Yellowjackets had four players in double-digits in kills for the match that recorded a team score of 64 kills and over 50 percent attack average.
It was a big night for the freshmen of Montana State Billings. Three players had new career highs and one had a double in digs as she contributed to a team number of 73 digs in the match; second most this season.
The Yellowjackets offense was led by
Stormy Siemion who had her third double-double in a row and a new career-high of 22 kills and was second on the team and second on the season with 17 digs. Siemion was paced by fellow freshman
Ashlynn Ward who had a team high .294 attack percent and finished second on the team in kills with 16.
Monica Grimsrud finished with 13 kills and
Chelsey Walter hit .214 and put down 11.
Krista Norris led Montana State Billings (4-16, 1-10 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) in digs; she had 18 in the match.
Kyndal Williams was one shy of her season record as she put up 51 assists on the night.
At the net, freshman
Julia Anderson had a new individual career-high as she was in on six blocks. Grimsrud was in on four and three Yellowjackets finished with two.
All four sets were tightly contested battles as both teams fought back from points down to try and take control of the set.
The Rocky offense was led by Yang Yang who had a team-high 17 kills. Anna Dewald had 10 while Ahlea Billis contributed 7. Rocky Mountain College (18-5, 10-2 Frontier) hit .195 for the match, but was limited on points as MSUB outhit the Bears 64-48 in kills.
Brooke Myers led Rocky on the defensive court; she had a team-high 14 digs. Tori Bertsch had 10 and Jennifer Donaldson had 11 digs on the night. Bertsch had a team-high 37 assists for the match.
At the net, the Bears out-blocked the Yellowjackets 13-9. Yang led the team in block assists; she was in on seven. Dewald had four and Elli Hellerud and Kylie Nielsen were in on three.
This snaps a seven-match losing streak for Montana State Billings. MSUB went into the game having lost the last 11 of 12 matches. This also snaps a three-game losing streak to Rocky Mountain College, the last loss an exhibition match in August of this year.
