Billings, Mont. – Montana State Billings women's basketball team won their 10th straight home game as they hold off Western Oregon's late second half surge. The Yellowjackets defeated the Wolves 62-55, and improve to 13-5 overall, 7-3 in the GNAC.

MSUB controlled the majority of the game and kept Western Oregon at a respectable distance until the later minutes of the second half. The Yellowjackets would use defense and clutch free throws to close out the contest.

“It was a good win for us tonight, we played well at certain times and let down at other times,” stated head coach Kevin Woodin. “I give Western Oregon a lot of credit they played tough for the entire game.”

Monica Grimsrud made her first start of the season and finished tied with a team high 13 points. She also grabbed eight rebounds, dished two assists, tallied two steals and blocked one shot. It's the second consecutive game Grimsrud has scored in double figures.

Kayleen Goggins and Janiel Olson were the other two starters to record double digit point totals for MSUB. Goggins recorded 13 points and five rebounds; while Olson scored 11 points, grabbed eight rebounds, passed two assists, stole two passes and blocked one shot.

Junior guard and co-captain, Bobbi Knudsen had an off night and finished with only eight points and three assists.

Quinn Peoples came off the bench and contributed quality minutes, finishing with nine points and two rebounds.

“Grimsrud and Goggins gave us a solid presence inside,” Woodin said. “Peoples played well offensively and made some key baskets.”

Melissa Fowler had a great performance for the Wolves, finishing with a game high 20 points and nine rebounds. Dana Goularte came off the bench to score 13 points and record three steals.

MSUB jumped out to an early 13 point lead (18-5) midway through the first half. Western Oregon cut the lead to eight (28-20) with 1:16 remaining in the first half.

Grimsrud nailed two free throws with 53 seconds left in the half to eventually hold a 10 point advantage at halftime (30-20).

Annie DePuydt drained a three-pointer at the start of the second half to put the Jackets up 13 (33-20) at 19:42. MSUB would go on to extend their advantage to 21 (58-37) and 9:21 remaining in the game. Western Oregon would not go away quietly, and slowly shipped away at the Jackets lead.

“I was impressed with the way we came out in the second half,” stated Woodin. “We defended well and got some transition baskets. We built a good lead, but Western Oregon fought hard to get back into the game.”

As MSUB held a 14 point lead (60-46) at 3:31, the Wolves went on a 9-0 run to come within in five of the Jackets (60-55) and 48 seconds remaining. Western Oregon forced a turnover at 43 seconds, but would not be able to capitalize as they faced a stiff MSUB defense and missed two jump shots.

Grimsrud and Olson each made a clutch free throw in the closing seconds and the Yellowjackets would go on to claim their seventh conference victory. The Wolves fall to 7-13 overall, 2-8 in the GNAC.

Both teams were efficient with their possessions as Western Oregon had 13 turnovers compared to MSUB's 11. The Yellowjackets out-rebounded the Wolves 33-28.

“Our rotations were different than usual tonight, and that will benefit us in the later parts of the season,” Woodin said. “Rebounding was key for us tonight.”

Next on the agenda for MSUB is Saint Martin's University on Saturday, Feb. 2 at 7:00 p.m. in Alterowitz Gymnasium.

“St. Martin's is a hot team; a very patient, well coached and disciplined team,” stated Woodin. “They will be a tough opponent and it will take a great effort to be successful. We are looking forward to the match up.”
