Billings, Mont. - Montana State Billings women's soccer team held a nine game winning streak as they entered Bellingham, Wash. to square off against Western Washington University. While the Yellowjackets played a very competitive match they fell to their conference foe 3-0.
Western Washington, 8-2 overall and 5-1 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference was recently listed as the No. 8 team in the west region by the NSCAA/Continental Tire Sept. 25 poll. MSUB faced a tough challenge as they tried to extend their winning streak to 10 games.
The Vikings came out on the attack fast as they scored their first goal within the first ten minutes of play (7:04). Joana Houplin got the assist from Kristin Maris and Ashton Griffen, and hit a chip shot over freshman goal keeper
Aiko Johnson to put Western Washington ahead 1-0.
Being behind on the scoreboard, the Yellowjackets countered back with an aggressive offensive attack.
Chelsea Shuman took the first shot for MSUB that went wide of the goal in the 22
nd minute of play. Sophomore
Jennifer Johnson took the next shot for the Jackets in the 30
th minute but her shot also landed wide.
In the closing minutes of the first half,
Jaucelyn Richter and Whiney Siler both took shot attempts that did not yield any scores, with Richter's shot being blocked and Siler's landing wide.
Western Washington led the Jackets going into the break 1-0. MSUB was outshot 6-4 by the opposition.
For only the second time this season, the Yellowjackets entered the second half behind on the scoreboard. Both teams battled back and forth and were playing an even match until the Vikings dealt another crucial blow.
In the 75
th minute of the contest Anna Geldenhuys took a shot from 21 yards out that landed in the upper far left corner of the goal, giving Western Washington a commanding 2-0 lead.
Strategically trying to get back into the match, MSUB fired three consecutive shots, with two being on target between the 76
th and 77
th minute. While Richter and
Teegan Koster took quality shots on goal, the Jackets' attempts uncharacteristically did not produce any goals.
The final blow the Vikings dealt to MSUB was in the 80
th minute when they scored their third goal of the match, effectively making a Yellowjacket comeback highly unlikely, and Western Washington defeated MSUB 3-0.
While MSUB followed suite with their previous matches and outshot their opponent (12-10), they unfortunately could not complete any shot on goal attempts. This is the first game that the Jackets have given up more than one goal.
While MSUB's nine game winning streak was snapped by a very solid program, the Yellowjackets are still undefeated at home this season. Now standing at 9-1 overall and 5-1 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, MSUB will play its next scheduled conference match at Yellowjacket Field in a rematch game against Northwest Nazarene University on Thursday, Oct. 4 at 3:30 p.m.
