Box Score Box Score

Billings, Mont. – Second year head coach Wojtek Krakowiak has the women's soccer team clicking on all cylinders as they reach the midpoint of the 2012 season. Entering their first full away weekend in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play, the Yellowjackets traveled to Burnaby, British Columbia to face off against Simon Fraser. Fresh off a NSCAA/Continental Tire No. 23 national ranking, MSUB showed no signs of let up as they won their match 2-0.

The Jackets and Simon Fraser played a very physical match, accounting for seven fouls within the first 20 minutes of play. Forward Jaucelyn Richter sparked MSUB's offense, taking the first shot of the contest in the 23rd minute. Following this attempt, MSUB took four consecutive shots between the 24th and 27th minute, with Richter and Whitney Siler's attempts landing on target.

Simon Fraser played good defense and did not allow any scores while facing heavy Yellowjacket offensive pressure. Jennifer Larsen and midfielder Teegan Koster took the final two shots of the half in the 31st and 39th minutes, with Larsen's attempt being saved by the Clan's Amanda Gililand.

While out shooting Simon Fraser 7-0, the Yellowjackets were not able to score any goals and they entered the intermission tied 0-0 with the opposition.

Heidi Greenback took the first shot of the second half in the 48th minute but the attempt landed wide left of the goal. The Clan countered with their first shot of the match that landed on goal in the 55th minute of play by Jessica Hadden. Freshman goal keeper Aiko Johnson rejected the attempt making her first save on the day.

The turning point in the match came in the 57th minute of the event where the Yellowjackets scored two consecutive goals within 20 seconds. MSUB's first goal (57:20) came off a header by Richter. Senior defender Adrienne Biglow put a free kick in great position and Richter finished the play by putting home the header attempt past the goal keeper.

Richter now has two goals on the year and has scored in two consecutive games

Ten seconds later (57:30) Siler put Greenback in a great position with a quality pass and she effectively completed the play, beating the goal keeper to put the Jackets ahead 2-0. Greenback now has four goals on the season and moves up to No. 7 on the all-time scoring leaders list among all Yellowjackets.

With a secure lead the Yellowjackets relied on Janae Remsberg and the defense to effectively close the door on Simon Fraser. MSUB's defense only allowed one shot attempt by the Clan in the 86th minute. While the shot was on goal, it did not produce a score as the shot attempt was saved by Johnson.

“We played well today against a good opponent,” stated Krakowiak. “Simon Fraser competed well and we had to earn our opportunities. I congratulate the team on another hard fought GNAC road victory.”

In total, the Yellowjackets outshot Simon Fraser 14-2 and held the shot on goal advantage 6-2. Johnson ended with two saves on the day and recorded her sixth shutout of the season.

Next on the agenda for MSUB is a matchup in Bellingham, Wash. against Western Washington on Saturday, Sept. 29 at 4:00 p.m. (Pacific Time). The Yellowjackets now sit at 9-0 overall and 5-0 in the GNAC.
