BILLINGS, Mont. – The Montana State University Billings volleyball team snapped a four-match losing streak to Seattle Pacific University in a key Great Northwest Athletic Conference four-set victory Saturday.

The Yellowjackets (5-6, 2-1 GNAC) picked up wins in the first two sets, before giving up the third, but winning the fourth. MSUB opened its 2012 home schedule with the victory. Entering the match, the Falcons had won five of the previous seven meetings, all in sweeps.

“This was an exciting match for us,” Montana State Billings' head coach Lisa Axel said. “To finally come home after a long road trip and to get a hard-fought win at home is huge for our confidence.”

Montana State Billings finished with a trio that had double digit kills. Jody Lutz and Monica Grimsrud both had 12 kills to lead the Yellowjackets. Taylor Adams added 11. Kyndal Williams had a match-high 46 assists, while Erin Compton added a team-high 28 digs. As a team, MSUB had a .328 to .258 hitting percentage advantage, and a 55-48 lead in kills.

The Yellowjackets got out to an early 5-1 lead in the first set, capped by a Grimsrud kill. An ace by Compton gave MSUB an 11-5 advantage, it largest lead of the set. Seattle Pacific would close within three several times, and even came within two at 23-21, but it was Montana State Billings that won the set, 25-21.

Montana State Billings controlled the second frame, never surrendering the lead. MSUB stretched a 13-11 lead to 18-11, the decisive run in the set. The Yellowjackets led by 11 twice in the second set. Montana State Billings won the set, 25-15.

The momentum shifted to SPU in the set three. The lead changed only once in the set, as MSUB had its only lead at 1-0. The Falcons dominated the set. After trailing by six, Montana State Billings closed within two points twice, but it was Seattle Pacific that took the third frame, 25-18.

The fourth set was close, with two ties and a lead change early, but again it was led mostly by the Yellowjackets. Montana State Billings went on a key 6-0 run late in the set, tied 16-16 to leading 22-16, to seal the 25-17 victory.

Cailin Fellows led the Falcons (4-8, 1-2) with 20 kills. Shelby Swanson had 40 assists and 10 digs. Brianna Leenders finished with 22 digs.

The Yellowjackets have won five of their last six contests, and welcome Northwest Nazarene (Idaho) for a 7 p.m. matchup Thursday. Live video and stats will be available on MSUBSports.com.
