Billings, Mont. – The Montana State Billings women's soccer team continues to improve with every contest, and second year head coach
Wojtek Krakowiak has the team on its best start since 2006. Competing against the Central Washington Wildcats in their second Great Northwest Athletic Conference game on Saturday, Sept. 15, the Yellowjackets controlled the game and cruised to a 2-0 win, increasing their winning streak to six games.
Other than an early shot on goal in the second minute of play by senior forward
Jaucelyn Richter, the pace of the first half was very mild tempered with each team feeling the other out. MSUB started to control the possession of the ball at the 15
th minute of play. Richter and
Whitney Siler took shots in the 16
th and 18
th minute that both went wide.
The Yellowjackets offense would break through in the 34
th minute of play when freshman
Katlyn Lokay gave a great pass between the defenders to
Chelsea Shuman putting her on a breakaway. Off the Lokay pass Shuman fired a shot from 15 yards out pass the keeper to put the Yellowjackets up 1-0.
Following the score, the pace of the game slowed down and MSUB entered the break with a one point advantage without any challenge.
Shuman stayed in rhythm to start the second half and received another great pass to put her in a power position. Off the Richter assist, Shuman dribbled by her defender giving her a second breakaway on the day. Effectively completing the play, Shuman scored her second goal of the day, third on the year, giving the Yellowjackets a secure 2-0 lead.
After Shuman's second score, MSUB kept possession of the ball for the majority of the half and didn't give the Wildcats an opportunity to get back in the game. The jackets efficiently closed the half and improved their overall record to 6-0 and conference record to 2-0 to remain unbeaten thus far on the year.
Aiko Johnson and the Jacket defense played great throughout the whole match and allowed for the offense to keep the possession of the ball. Johnson had four saves on the day and recorded her fourth shutout of the season.
“It's a very good conference win for us, Central Washington is a good team and they played hard today,” stated Krakowiak. “We controlled the game and created a lot of opportunities. The team helped Chelsea score two quality goals. Overall it was a good weekend, and we started GNAC play on a positive note.”
The Yellowjackets next GNAC match will be a part of a double header that includes the men's program. Saint Martin's University will travel into the Magic City to compete against both programs on Thursday, Sept. 20. The Women's team starts the event at 1:30 p.m. followed by the men who start their match at 4:00 p.m.
