Billings, Mont. – Montana State Billings women's basketball team opened their regular season slate on the road in Spearfish, S.D. Facing Black Hills State University the Yellowjackets lost 65-63 on a last second shot.
Black Hills State had three players who scored in double digits, with Bailey Kusser leading all scorers, tallying 19 points on 5-12 shooting. As a team Black Hills State shot 47.9 percent from the field and 85.7 percent from the free throw line.
MSUB had an off shooting night going 24-67 (35.8%) from the field and 7-22 (31.8%) from the three point arch. The Yellowjackets won the battle on the boards, out rebounding their opponent 30-25, and also had fewer turnovers than Black Hills State, 14-19.
Kayleen Goggins, Bobbi Kundsen and
Quinn Peoples all scored in doubles digits for MSUB with Goggins leading the team in scoring with 15 points.
Janiel Olson led the Jackets in rebounding grabbing seven on the night.
The Yellowjackets jumped out to an early 23-10 lead in the first nine minutes of the contest. Black Hills State went on a 12-0 run to bring the score at 23-22 at 5:28. MSUB countered with a run of their own as they scored nine points compared to Black Hills' six to close the half.
MSUB led 32-28 entering the break.
“We started very well and hit some shots early to give us a good lead in the first nine minutes of the game,” stated head coach
Kevin Woodin. “We got stagnate on offense to end the half, but I give Black Hills a lot of credit they battled to get back into the game.”
Black Hills came out strong in the second half, scoring eight points to the Jackets four, tying the score at 36-36 at the 16:28 mark. A Goggins lay-up broke the tie and regained the lead for MSUB.
At 12:52 the Jackets led 44-39; with an offensive spark, Black Hills captured the lead with a 14-0 run.
With 7:43 left in the game, Black Hills held the 54-44 advantage. The Yellowjackets fought back to come within three of their counterpart at 1:38. Holding the 61-58 lead, Black Hills State hit two free throws to increase their lead to 63-58.
Peoples nailed a three pointer at 1:05 to cut the opponents' lead down to two. As Black Hills missed a three point attempt with 29 seconds left, MSUB regained possession on a dead ball. With 10 seconds left,
Brooke Tolman grabbed a rebound off a Knudsen miss and passed it to Peoples to knock down the game tying jumper.
Three seconds remained on the clock after Black Hills called a time out. Chelsey Biegler hit a running bank shot from the free throw line to score the game winning basket as Black Hills State went on to capture the 65-63 victory.
“In the second half we started slow, but I was proud of the way we responded and fought back to tie the game with 3.7 seconds left,” Woodin said. “Unfortunately we lost on the buzzer beater. Despite the loss it was a good game for us as we saw a lot of game situations that will make us better going forward. Our challenge is getting ready for Chadron State tomorrow, and we are looking forward for the matchup.”
The Yellowjackets will look to bounce back quickly, as they face off against Chadron State College Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
