Billings, Mont. – Following a disappointing loss last weekend, the Montana State Billings women's soccer team was focused and determined to get back into the winning column. The Yellowjackets took care of business as they traveled into Ellensburg, Wash. Thursday evening and defeated the Central Washington Wildcats 2-0. MSUB now with 11 wins has matched their win total from last season.
The Yellowjackets didn't waist anytime implementing their offense as
Chelsea Shuman took the first shot on goal of the match in the second minute of play. Central Washington's Kayla Lipston made a nice save on the attempt. The Wildcats effectively countered controlling possession between the sixth and ninth minute, taking three shots.
Jennifer Larson and the backline were back to early season form as they forced the Wildcats' three attempts to land off target.
Regaining possession, the Jackets went back on the attack, outshooting Central Washington 5-1 between the 10
th and 18
th minute of play.
Adrienne Biglow,
Jessie Mancilla and Shuman all had shots on goal during this surge.
A costly offside penalty in the 19
th minute would prove to be a key play in the match. With possession back in their grasp, the Jackets effectively took advantage. At 20:54 Shuman stole the ball from the dribbler and gave a pass to
Heidi Greenback, who knocked in a header past Lipston, giving MSUB the early 1-0 lead.
The score marked Greenback's sixth score on the year.
Central Washington tried to answer back after the score but shot attempts by Nicole Laughlin and Carson McKole in the 21
st and 23
rd minute went wide.
A corner kick in the 25
th minute would prove to be the second key play in the game. After Biglow put the ball in play, midfielder
Kristen Kastelic made a great steal and pass to Greenback putting her one on one with the keeper. Greenback blasted the shot past Lipston to land in the bottom left of the net scoring her seventh goal of the year and giving MSUB a commanding 2-0 lead.
Shortly after Greenback's second score, the Wildcats took their first shot on goal attempt (27:01) that was saved by the Jackets backline. Central Washington took two more shot attempts that didn't produce any scores and the Yellowjackets held the two score advantage going into the break.
MSUB started the second half equally as strong as the first with freshman midfielder
Katlyn Lokay taking a shot on goal in the 46
th minute of play. Greenback took a shot in the 48
th minute but her attempt went wide right.
Central Washington went on the attack between 60
th and 75
th minute taking three shot attempts compared to the Yellowjackets one. Freshman goal keeper
Aiko Johnson made a great save on McKole's shot on goal attempt at 60:53.
Senior
Jaucelyn Richter took the final two shots of the half for MSUB, with the 76:07 attempt landing on target. The Wildcats made one last push in the closing minutes but their attack was met by a stout Yellowjacket defense and MSUB closed out the game with the 2-0 shutout victory.
"It was a great team effort and I am really proud of the girls and how they played," stated head coach
Wojtek Krakowiak. "We were able to capitalize on our scoring chances by netting two goals in the first half."
Johnson finished with three saves and recorded her seventh shutout victory of the season. While Central Washington held the advantage in total shots 17-15, MSUB edged out the Wildcats 8-4 in shots on target.
Now at 11-2 overall and 7-2 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, the Yellowjackets will head to Seattle, Wash. on Saturday, Oct. 13 for a highly anticipated matchup with conference rival Seattle Pacific.
