BISMARCK, N.D. -- A goal in the second minute of overtime by the University of Mary handed the Montana State Billings women's soccer team a 2-1 setback, it was the first loss of the season for the Yellowjackets.
“I thought we played ok today,” said interim head coach
Wojtek Krakowiak. “I just think that we're wasting a lot of opportunities and are not closing the chances we have. We have to learn to close out games when we're leading as well. Now we have to get ready for the conference season and be ready to play next week.”
Dayna Domingo sent a shot in from 23 yards out that just snuck in underneath the crossbar at 91:11 in the first overtime. It was Domingo's first goal of the season and leveled Mary's record at 2-2, while dropping the Jackets to 3-1 on the season.
The Yellowjackets posted the first score of the afternoon in the first half as
Jaucelyn Richter took a pass from
Heidi Greenback and beat the keeper to her left at the 21:48 mark. It was the first goal of the year for Richter and Greenback and
Jennifer Larsen were credited with an assist on the goal.
Mary put the equalizer in the back of the net in the 70
th minute when Michelle Jones took a through ball from Alex Williams-Bachman and beat
Danielle Gordon into the lower left. The goal was the first this season allowed by Gordon who had three shut outs prior to today's match.
The Marauders took advantage of the momentum in the extra period as they wasted no time putting the ball on frame. Domingo sailed the ball in just over a minute into the overtime for the game-winner.
The Yellowjackets were out shot in the match 11-7, but held a 3-1 edge in corner kicks. Richter and Greenback were the only Jackets to record shots during the match. Gordon made four saves in the match for the Yellowjackets in taking the loss.
The Yellowjackets will now enter conference play on the road as they take on Saint Martin's University Thursday, Sept. 15, at 2 p.m. and then at Western Oregon on Saturday, Sept. 17, at 11 a.m.
