BILLINGS, Mont. -- Driving snow and bitterly cold weather could not cool down the Montana State Billings women's soccer team as the Yellowjackets blanked Northwest Nazarene 4-0 on senior day at Yellowjacket Field as MSUB concluded their conference and regular season schedule with the win.
The Yellowjackets finished the season with an 11-3-4 record and an 8-2-4 record in the conference. The Jackets finished second in the league with today's victory and finished the season with the fewest losses in program history.
“Today was an awesome game for us,” said interim head coach
Wojtek Krakowiak. “The girls played really really well. It was a great way for us to end the season. I'm happy for the seniors and we're really sad to see them go, but that's collegiate sports. It was good season for us, this team is really special. We made some plays today despite the weather and finished our chances really well.”
After MSUB staff and others spent the entire morning clearing the field of the snow, Saturday's match got underway at 3:20 p.m. after originally being scheduled for 1 p.m.
Sluggish play dominated the early going, but the Jackets broke through in the 38
th minute when
Heidi Greenback took a through ball on the far side of the pitch from
Jaucelyn Richter and put her shot past Tanya Zickefoose for her seventh goal of the season.
Just thirty seconds later the Yellowjackets hit pay-dirt again when Richter took a long service from senior
Amanda Brusic and cracked a shot from 20 yards out just under the crossbar for her 10
th goal of the season. Greenback also was credited with an assist on the play.
The two goals in thirty seconds tied the MSUB record for fastest time elapsed between goals, which was set originally on Sept. 2, 2006 against Texas-Permian Basin.
Leading 2-0 after the break, Richter pushed the Jackets ahead even further when she struck for her 11
th goal of the season in the 51
st minute. Again she teamed with Brusic down the right side punched the ball in from 12 yards out into the lower right corner.
With the snow falling even harder and covering the field again, Brusic put the finishing touches on a brilliant senior day as she scored a goal in the 56
th minute.
Jennifer Brookshire crossed the ball through the box to an open Greenback who touched the ball back to Brusic 18 yards out.
The Jackets dominated the possession of the game and outshot NNU 14-3 and 9-1 in shots on goal. The Jackets also held a 3-0 edge in corner kicks.
Senior
Danielle Gordon recorded her eighth shutout of the season, making one save on the afternoon. Gordon finished this season with the lowest goals against average in MSUB history (0.63).
