BILLINGS, Mont. -- On a miserably cold and rainy day at Yellowjacket Field, the Montana State Billings women's soccer team couldn't escape misfortune as a goal by Hanna Massee in the 97
th minute gave Saint Martin's a 1-0 overtime win Saturday in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.
The Yellowjackets, who played the final 21 minutes of the second half and all of the overtime period a man down, fell to 8-2-3 overall and 5-1-3 in the conference, suffering their first loss in league play. The Saints improved to 3-8-2 overall and are now 3-6 in the conference.
“I thought the team played a great game today and have nothing to hang their heads about,” said interim head coach
Wojtek Krakowiak. “We had some opportunities that slipped through our hands, and it's always difficult when you're forced to play a man down for such a long period of time. Give credit to Saint Martin's, they had some good plays and finished their chance. I just can't say enough of how proud I am at the way the team played today even after the result we got.”
The Yellowjackets had a couple of opportunities in regulation as they had three shots that rang off the post and crossbar to keep the match level.
A red card for
Amanda Brusic in the 69
th minute forced the Jackets to play a man down, but MSUB continued to push forward and create chances.
The final chance in regulation came with just 30 seconds left as the Jackets pressed the Saints defense and created an opportunity at the top of the box.
Tyshae Davis was tangled up with a defender, but managed to get off a right footed shot that trickled just wide of the post.
Massee's game-winner came at the 96:10 mark as she took a loose ball and ripped a shot from 22 yards out, beating MSUB keeper
Danielle Gordon in the upper left corner.
The Jackets held a 15-10 edge in shots and a 11-0 edge in corner kicks. Both teams were even in shots on goal with four apiece.
The Yellowjackets will now head back to the road with a pair of conference matches at Western Washington on Thursday and at Simon Fraser on Saturday, finishing their 2011 road schedule.
