Unbeaten in League Play, Yellowjacket Women Return Home

BILLINGS, Mont. -- Returning from a 2-0-1 road trip, the Montana State Billings women's soccer team returns home this week for a pair of Great Northwest Athletic Conference matches against Western Oregon University on Thursday at 1 p.m. and Saint Martin's University on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.

The Yellowjackets are currently 8-1-2 on the year and sit one point behind conference leader Seattle Pacific at the top of the table with a 5-0-2 record and 17 points.

The Jackets collected three more points last week after rolling to a 6-1 victory at Northwest Nazarene. Sophomore Jennifer Brookshire scored two goals, while junior Jaucelyn Richter and sophomore Jackie Hill each tallied two assists. Three other players, Heidi Greenback, Jennifer Larsen and Jennifer Johnson also scored in the match, with Greenback tallying an assist.

Greenback currently leads the team with 18 total points after scoring six goals and recording a team-high six assists. Her six goals tie her with Richter for the team lead, as Richter has 15 points after recording her three assists.

The Yellowjackets have outscored opponents 24-7 this season and have doubled up the opposition in shots on goal 80-40. The Jackets are shooting .645 on goal, while holding opponents to just .388 shooting. Those numbers have helped keeper Danielle Gordon record five shutouts on the year and post a 0.61 goals against average.

Western Oregon will travel to Billings with a 4-5-2 overall record and a 3-3-1 conference record. The Wolves are coming off a 2-1 road victory at Saint Martin's a week ago and have now won two straight. WOU sits fifth in the GNAC table with 10 points this season.

The Wolves are led by Lindsay Bauman and Marina Austin who have three goals apiece and both have one assist on the season. Only four other players have scored a goal as WOU has scored 10 times this season.

WOU has been outscored 13-10 this year, but have outshot opponents 142-109. The defense has been strong despite the 13 goals allowed; recording four shutouts and helping keeper Brittney Rigtrup record a 1.12 goals against average.

The Yellowjackets and Wolves played to a 1-1 draw in their first match this season at Monmouth. The Wolves scored first in the 12th minute as Kymberly Witmer scored her lone goal of the season, but the Jackets countered in the 36th minute on a goal by Greenback to earn the draw.

That result pushed MSUB's record to 6-3-1 all-time against the Wolves and have kept the Jackets unbeaten in the last five contests against Western Oregon.

Saint Martin's comes into the week with a 1-8-2 record overall and are 1-6-0 in the GNAC, sitting in seventh with three points. The Saints are coming off their loss to Western Oregon at home and have dropped two straight.

Ashley Richardson currently leads the Saints in scoring with five points after her team-high two goals and one assist. Four other players have recorded goals for the Saints this season, while just two other players have assists.

SMU has been outscored 20-6 this season and has been outshot 172-93. The Saints are shooting just .065, while opponents are shooting .116. Three goalkeepers have been used this season as Gina Cardenas has figured in most of the results with a 1-6-1 record.

The Yellowjackets scored a pair of first half goals and added a third in the second half to win the first meeting of the season at Lacey, 3-0 on Sept. 15. Richter had a career day, scoring her first hat-trick, while Gordon made two saves in the win.

MSUB snapped a three-game skid against the Saints with their win earlier in the season. The Jackets are now 5-4-0 against SMU all-time.
