Another Second Half Dooms Yellowjackets, 73-52

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- The University of Alaska Anchorage used a dominating second half performance Wednesday evening to hand the Montana State Billings men's basketball team a 73-52 loss at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex in a game featured on FSN Northwest.

 

With the loss the Yellowjackets fell to 3-9 on the season and 1-4 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. The Seawolves on the other hand, improved their record to 11-3, winning their last 10 in a row, and are 3-0 in league play.

 

Leon Sutton (Las Vegas, NV) and Jaxon Myaer (Salt Lake City, UT) both led the Jackets with a team-high 13 points as the pair combined for 11-of-27 shooting from the floor. Myaer and DeAndre Chambers (Monroe, NC) each finished the game with five assists as Chambers finished with seven points.

 

The Jackets finished the game with 44.7 percent shooting from the field, but were just 4-of-14 from three-point range and 6-of-11 from the charity stripe. The Seawolves only shot 44.4 percent from the field, but ripped the nets in the second half, shooting 56.0 percent from the field, including 6-of-11 from deep. The Seawolves were also solid from the line, going 14-of-16 from the stripe.

 

The Jackets fell behind early in the first half, down 8-3 before Myaer hit a soft jumper from the top of the lane. Robert Mayes (Houston, TX) then had a put back in the paint before Chambers hit a huge three-point shot to tie the game at 10-10 and cap a 7-2 run.

 

MSUB went on another run during the middle of the half, using a Tyler Barnes (Portland, OR) mid-range jumper to spark an 11-6 run.

 

As the half wound down the Seawolves pulled themselves back into the contest, scoring the final six points on a turnover at half court by Myaer, leading to an intentional foul. Robinson converted one of the free throws and dropped a three to end the half.

 

The Yellowjackets were 10-of-22 from the floor in the first half, while containing the Seawolves who shot 34.5 percent from floor. UAA had problems from deep, shooting just 33.3 percent, while MSUB shot 40.0 percent and went 2-of-3 from the line.

 

The second half stayed close through the 16 minute mark as the Jackets saw their last lead of the game when Sutton drove the lane and kissed the ball off the glass for a 34-33 lead.

 

The Seawolves finally put the clamps down on the Jackets as they regained the lead, 36-34, with 15:58 left in the game. From there UAA went on a 19-2 run, including holding the Jackets without a field goal for over five and a half minutes, extending their lead to 53-36.

 

The Yellowjackets could not manage to get any closer than 12 as UAA knocked down six three's in the second half and outscored the Jackets 45-26 in the half.

 

UAA was led by a game-high 21 points from Brandon Walker and received 16 points from Taylor Rohde and 13 points and a game-high nine boards from Mario Gill. Steve White and Drew Robinson had a combined 11 assists for the Seawolves.

 

UAA dominated the boards, outrebounding the Jackets 36-20, including 15-5 on the offensive end. The Seawolves forced 14 Yellowjacket turnovers and committed 13 of their own.

 

The Yellowjackets continue the road trip this Saturday, Dec. 8, at Alaska Fairbanks; tip-off is scheduled for 3:15 p.m. in the afternoon. The game will have live stats and a webstream available through the Nanooks website http://alaskananooks.com/.
